Are you really?! How cool! We're about 20 minutes south of Simpsonville- near The Happy Cow. My kids go to Fork Shoals, so we are in the very southernmost tip of the county. Well, one of my kids goes to Fork Shoals- the other will start 3rd grade at the Charles Townes Center at Sterling in August. I have a smarty-pants 8 year old!

We are very excited although it is going to be a loooong haul for us all the way to Sterling 5 days a week.

Ohhh Happy Cow~ I just love that place and the sound of it! We are up on exit 27 Fairview Street in Simpsonville. I've got 2 kids my son is turning 10 and my daughter is 7! They grow up so fast

Nice to have a smarty pants by the way~ lol Hopefully the drive will be a pretty one! Well glad to know were neighbors

We'll have to have some chicken talk some time!

Hi, everyone! We're are down at Isle of Palms enjoying the beach. Finally got some internet access. At least it's not as hot here on the coast. I lost 7 hens to heat last week. Didn't lose any last year.

And those stinking hawks have carried off two chicks and killed 10 others. My poor flock is dwindling! My sister is taking care of the farm while we're gone and she's so upset! We'll have to figure something out when we get back. Most of the chickens run for cover when the hawk comes but some of them just don't get it!

Hope everyone is staying cool!

Sounds good!

Susanne, I'm so sorry about your flock being decimated. I have five chicks that are 6 weeks old and their mama just stopped mothering them, so they are wandering around in a little pack by themselves. I am hoping they will heed any warnings from the roos, but I know a hawk could grab them. It would upset me, but I guess that's the price of free ranging.

Went out to check on food and water for everyone and found two of the almost week-olds had squeezed through the chicken wire into the run. (Everyone is out in the yard free ranging.) The Marans mama was hanging around, trying to coax them back out. I went in and got them, and noticed one was pretty lethargic. I looked closer and something happened to its left eye, it's all swollen. What I think happened was the chicks got in the run and the mama pecked at this one, accidentally injuring it, when it panicked and tried to squeeze back out. She is a tiny bit weird with them. Anyway, I am assuming that's what happened, it's as good a guess as any. No one else is injured and this one wasn't like this this morning, so I do think it's an injury and not an illness. I brought it in, made it drink, got a drop of vitamins into it, and wiped its little eye and slathered some Terramycin ointment on it. Poor little thing screamed in pain

The swelling seems to have gone down a tiny bit. Thank goodness I still have the brooder set up. I'll make it some scrambled egg a bit later.

And to top things off, our favorite EE, Kitty, has now gone broody

My husband came in last night and said Kitty was in the nest box when he closed the coop up, and I said no, no more broodies and chicks for now. He said why and I told him unless he's planning on building another coop, then we don't have any more room. Besides, we are going to Pawleys Island in three weeks, right when these would be due to hatch. I really don't want to be out of town for a week while new ones are hatching. Sure, these are just barnyard mixes, but they are my barnyard mixes and I want to keep them safe and healthy, not rely on some neighbor to know what to do if someone needs something!

carolinagirl~ obviously what happened to you was not very fair nor was it very considerate to you and your birds. Regardless of scientific facts or opinions... it comes down to the "opinion" of the owner of the chickens with how they deal with the health of their flock. I love my birds and if one got sick I would isolate it and do everything to nurse it back to health before I'd consider culling it. My birds are personal pets to me, I do not breed them to sell so my decision wouldn't affect anyone else so that kind of decision is left up to each of us. If I was a breeder and intended to sell them, well then I would surely be very cautious of the condition and health of my birds. I don't think I would call that sticking our heads in the sand debating whether or it is necessary to cull our birds. That is a very hard and difficult decision to make~ for anyone. I can understand why you would be angry with the person who sold you sick birds~ I don't know what your chicks were infected with but you made a decision based off of the reasons you did. There are a number of things from what I've read that can cause health issues with birds, including toxic plants, moldy things injested, heat exhausting, etc. Who knows for sure what is causing the problems with hers. Does that mean she needs to cull her entire flock, that's a personal choice which she is entitled to. In the end these scientific facts, which do change daily~ is just information we can consider when making the choices we have to make. Did you test the chicks to see what they were sick with? I can't imagine what that was like for you to go through but I'm deeply sorry you had to go through what you did. I think most people on this website can sympathize with you as well as with the person who is fighting to keep their flock alive and in good health. Again, I'm sorry for what you went through

Hey Pinkwindsong ~ Have you ever heard of using Oxine for treating and curing respiratory sickness in chickens!!! I just came acros alot of info on it~http://www.shagbarkbantams.com/oxine.htm Check it out and see what you think. Maybe this is something worth looking at for any future coughs or sneezes. They sell this at amazon and had lots of awesome reviews from poultry owners. Good for you~ everyone has their opinions
