I found an old auction on here with some of her eggs and found 3 pages of arguments with it, along with negative comments from a judge so I figured she may be getting out of the chicken business for a reason other than what she posted on the other forum.

Oh well, it is done now and I will have to see how the hatch goes. So many times shipped eggs do not do well anyhow. I just like the best chance possible for them.

I FINALLY got me some starter BLRW breeding adults!!!

Please feel free to leave some feedback about them. Gary in Salley, SC sold them to me. He's been breeding chickens for 30+ years. He said he wasn't perfectly happy with these due to a few simple faults, but they make nice birds to start a program with. Maybe not show quality, but definately beautiful pet quality. He has AMAZING true HERITAGE RIR flock too!

I am currently an Ohioian, but the wife and I are considering moving to South Carolina. I'm not so sure I want to move to a climate that is hotter and more humid, but it's what DW wants. So...........tell me all the good things about SC. We would be looking for something with 2-5 acres and a barn of some sort for the animals. Are these type of properties abundant? For something with this acreage and a fixer up house, any idea what it would cost? What are you paying for chicken feed (layer and meat).

I'm located near the Savannah River & Augusta, GA (Masters for those golf fans). I pay $15 for medicated chick starter crumbles, $12 for laying pellets.

Hey Amy, I did my NPIP testing today. The cochins ended up in a crate as they were being finished with, so thought I would send you a pic.

A quick place to look at small farm prices is actually on Craigslist. As far as feed costs go, I ship my in from Countryside Organics so I can't say much about local feed prices.

You have built up a magnificent flock and I totally adore them all. I also forgot to show you another blue Mottled pullet that hatched out. That is 2 out of 78 eggs I have set from them. This one I am keeping! I am so hoping she will be as lovely as the one you got from me last year!

Way to go on your Mottleds and testing. Did you have to take a day off from work?

Upstate SC offers a bit cooler temps and is close to the mountains for even more cooler weather. We go into NC quite often to see Biltmore Estate and Gardens or other beautiful spots. Greenville has a lot of culture spots that I seldom visit but are well worth while.
If you are looking for affordable small farms then look into Gray Court for flatter land but Travelers Rest is nice, too. Just up there you have red mud and hills. Out where I am at it is growing up and land isn't as reasonable as it once was. We still have some marvelous places between Spartanburg and Landrum though.
The coast is close enough for a good 4 hour drive if you head to Charleston from Spartanburg.
I am not sure what land is like around Chester. Betsy could answer that better. It may be a bit hotter over that way.
Places around Columbia have more clay soil but it also offers a lot of great cultural events.

But it sounds like Grey Court may be more to your liking. Although Landrum may still be a good choice, too.

I get my grain at a local mill. Laying mash is $9.50. That is in Campobello. Look around that area for a small farm. I bet you could find something off Hwy 176 at a decent price. Anything off Hwy 11 may be a bit more costly due to the view of the mountains.
If you feed pellets then the cost varies. I think the Purina still goes for around $14 a bag.

If you want to know more I could talk your ears off and give you way more info than what you probably want or need.
