I spent the evening trying to stake up my tomato plants. This weather and wind has been brutal on them. On another note, here's one of my baby watermelon's for your enjoyment.

Ummmmm......dinner.

Actually we have a few roos ourselves that will never be rehomed or eaten. Thanks to my DD who has a soft spot for some roosters.

I'm sorry Tiffany, I wish I could take them. But I'm rooster poor already. I can't/don't eat my birds and so far I've refused to sell them at the auction. This year I'm giving them away with every batch of layer hens that I sell. Sold a trio yesterday, 2 layer hens that I charged for and 1 free roo. The customer wasn't planning on getting a rooster but since it was free - he gladly took it. I really don't need to sell any layers because I don't have enough eggs as it is. But that is how I rehome the roos. I've had people refuse and I just keep them all. If they don't take a roo then they don't get my pullets/hens either. And FYI, if you are local to the upstate I've hatched quite a few polish crested chicks and I'd be glad to let you know when I can tell which are hens. Mine are all white crested black. Now I'm on a search to find me some of those blues, they are beautiful.

I got some chickens today! I picked up two blue laced red wyandottes and then just for giggles and grins I got some golden pheasant babies. Picked them up from "phoneman". I've never had pheasants before. Was quite in shock when the little guy shot out his box and flew into my ceiling. Wings clipped...check! Will post photos but about to go to bed now

Ah, you probably know already that we eat ours. Well, not the Silkies or Sizzles as we don't like the meat on them. It has a totally different flavor to us and we haven't found a recipe we like. But most of our roos that stay will go in the freezer when I can get DH to help. It is too much for me alone when he and I can put 9 away in an hour.
I would rather sell them for breeding or pets but it just doesn't happen all the time. Everyone wants hens and like Joy I have about gotten to the point where you buy hens you need to take roos. My freezer is about full!
However, most folks are already roo heavy and don't want any roosters. Goodness knows I have more than my share but if you breed then you will have them and only so many can free range.

Hey, I am just happy that Nicole found out she liked chickens almost as much as ducks!
Did you all pop those Muscovy eggs in the 'bator? What did DH say? Probably nothing to Nicole!

See you all and Boyfriend later today!

Those blue Polish are very pretty! I am not as big on blue as reds and yellows but the blue Polish is eye appealing.
And I am not a Polish lover but you all probably feel the same about my butt-less birds! The Araucana.

I need to sell my quad but every day when I feed them I just love them so and the girls jump up on the ledge for petting.
I have set very few eggs this year and what I did set have all been clear so I really don't want to sell them as breeding birds. I suppose I could give them something more to boost the fertility and trim some bums but I am not big on raising more chicks at this time.
I am down to one baby brooder and 3 grow up brooders. Totally easier on me now.

Oh, how pretty! Gotta love those BLRW!!!!
I was getting a lot of splash but now am starting to get more dark feathered ones. The dark blue is finally coming out in the breeding. But I love them all and though the splash seems to pop more the darker blue is enchanting. I got both in my Jerry Foley hatch, too.

I would love to have pheasants but just no time or room.
Joy has a pair and they are so pretty. If you ever want to know if you will like something go to Joy's and see it in person! I was captivated by those Peacocks!

Joy, I am trying to find someone wanting some of your ducklies since you have them everywhere! Too cute but will the mamas go broody again this year?
My Muscovy are broody for a second time but that darn Pekin is ruining their nests.

Haha thanks Amy! It's all starting to sink in now... This was my first time with chickens so I'm learning the ropes as I go! That's neat how the meat tastes different in the birds, never would have thought that! Now the one roo that keeps pecking me in the foot might be introduced to my freezer if he does it one more time!

I only have the 4 girls which I'm keeping so I couldn't do the hen/roo deal. But I'll sort it out soon!
