Rooster problems: Yes it is hard letting them go, but I find that I just have to shut them out once sold. You cannot be responsible for everyone and every bird. Otherwise just cull them if you are over worried about who is getting them. It is a harsh reality of chicken life I have found out.......

Sorry I crossed the border by mistake!! don't arrest me!

Ummmmm......dinner.

Actually we have a few roos ourselves that will never be rehomed or eaten. Thanks to my DD who has a soft spot for some roosters.

I'm sorry Tiffany, I wish I could take them. But I'm rooster poor already. I can't/don't eat my birds and so far I've refused to sell them at the auction. This year I'm giving them away with every batch of layer hens that I sell. Sold a trio yesterday, 2 layer hens that I charged for and 1 free roo. The customer wasn't planning on getting a rooster but since it was free - he gladly took it. I really don't need to sell any layers because I don't have enough eggs as it is. But that is how I rehome the roos. I've had people refuse and I just keep them all. If they don't take a roo then they don't get my pullets/hens either. And FYI, if you are local to the upstate I've hatched quite a few polish crested chicks and I'd be glad to let you know when I can tell which are hens. Mine are all white crested black. Now I'm on a search to find me some of those blues, they are beautiful.

Buy a rooster get two free hens........Buy two hens get a free rooster.........hmmmm.......either way it does sound like a heck of a deal.

I have some EE boys & some BSL boys that we will eat.........if they stay around that long.....My family loves chicken

Personally I prefer to raise cornish cross to eat....but will use whatever we have on hand.

I know a lot that buy roosters at auction do so with intentions of making them freezer birds. Figure it may as well be me eating them instead of some stranger.

Ah, you probably know already that we eat ours. Well, not the Silkies or Sizzles as we don't like the meat on them. It has a totally different flavor to us and we haven't found a recipe we like. But most of our roos that stay will go in the freezer when I can get DH to help. It is too much for me alone when he and I can put 9 away in an hour.
I would rather sell them for breeding or pets but it just doesn't happen all the time. Everyone wants hens and like Joy I have about gotten to the point where you buy hens you need to take roos. My freezer is about full!
However, most folks are already roo heavy and don't want any roosters. Goodness knows I have more than my share but if you breed then you will have them and only so many can free range.

9 in an hour!

Hey, I am just happy that Nicole found out she liked chickens almost as much as ducks!
Did you all pop those Muscovy eggs in the 'bator? What did DH say? Probably nothing to Nicole!

She doesn't like all chickens. I think just cochins.

She put the little girl we bought from you in with her roo last night. It was love at first sight.

hubby went out to feed the girls this morning.
One of my 6 golden comets was dead.
there were feathers strewn about and she was half in and half out of the coop. didn't look like any prediter. They are only 15 months old. coop is fully enclosed and covered over the top to keep hawks out..

Wish I knew what happened.
This is my first loss.
How do you dispose of a dead bird?
