Again, may already be answered, but the spikes in their crests are called streamers and are a sure sign they are a boy. Sorry! I've had silkies get them pretty late (4-5 months) so I will be convinced they are girls and then... bam!

Girls do not get streamers.

So one of my little maran roos was had splay leg when he was a baby. I used bandaids and it corrected itself..well now here it is weeks and weeks later and he's all of a sudden gone splay leg again! And now he's way too big for bandaids...I'm considering putting him down. He's pitiful. I've been making sure he's eating and drinking but now he can barely move around. Any suggestions? I had no idea one would go splay leg at this age...but I guess since he had it when he as a baby maybe he was more likely to have it happen again.

He's such a cute fella..I hate to put him down but I can't really come up with many other options.

No problem Tiffany, I knew what you meant. I just thought I'd make myself a little more clear in case I had offended someone else here by killing the snake. I sometimes forget that others don't always see snakes as the predator that I view them as. I have been watching that snake thread and shared the info with a dear friend of mine who is losing all of his eggs and babies to a snake. Sadly, it doesn't seem to work on the BIG snakes. He has 2 traps set and the snake goes around them to eat from the nests. I may try them but most of the snakes here are really big too. I'll let you know if it works for me. Thanks for your offer of assistance.

My offer still stands - if anyone here NEEDS some snakes I'll gladly let them have the next few that I find. Oh, there was an ad on CL last night - someone giving away the rat snake in their barn (you catch it) because it ate two of his guineas!! He's much nicer than me.

Maybe try the selenium supplement, just to see if it helps?

Are you feeding 27% protein? My Marans always require a large amount of protein in some form. Though animal protein has proven to be better than plant protein for them. Marans grow so big so fast they need a lot to help them along and 21% chick starter just doesn't have what they need.
Also, I would not ever add Niacin to their water. Goodness knows how big of a bird you would get from that! It probably woudl not be good for their growth since they seem to out grow their legs anyhow.

We put about 14 young roos all out in an empty big tractor the other day and I had 2 JG roos separated to grow in different pens for a while. Now that the 2 blue brothers are back together it is amazing to see how big one is (a monster really!) and the other is more normal size for their age. I forgot that the one with the Marans was getting the Sporting bird starter and the other wasn't. Huge difference in size. I will try to get a photo today. It is pretty awesome.

I am still not sure I am going to keep a blue JG roo so if anyone is wanting one, speak up now. Otherwise in a few weeks they may not be here.

I know you can order Selenium online but I would try something like a GNC (they still have those?) or Walmart, Kmart or Walgreens, too. Or if you can get it to eat tuna or eggs or both mixed together. Those have a high dose of Selenium.

There is a GNC in Greer beside the Bilo and Fatz (across from Lowe's). There is also one over on Woodruff Road at the shops at Greenridge (unless it's closed up since I was there last).

Since you are in Pickens, I just checked and there is a GNC in downtown Easley, the address said Pendleton St. That may be the closest one for you.
