South Carolina

since my 3 golden comets were killed by a racoon i have 3 left. I am going to visit my daughter and my gr son and tomorrow my new gr daughter will make her presentation. We are planning to go in August for a week. My brother has chickens that have not started laying yet. still a few months away. Can I introduce my 3 girls into his flock for the time I am away? Do you think there would be a problem? they would be safer there than here alone and there is only 3 of them. They are very quiet and pleasant personality. Not at all aggressive.

You might be able to do it without much hassle. The comets might pick on the younger kids some, it just depends on how much room there is in the coop and run.
I would certainly try it but that is me.

I had the same thing happen with one of my silkies. Had spraddle leg as a chick but it resolved. Then about 4 months later, it came back. I tried everything to help that girl but she ended up dying. I hope yours turns out differently!

Golden comets are very docile and friendly birds. I've never had an aggression issue with any of mine. Usually it's the other way around, some of the other birds will pick on the comets. I would worry about introducing just 3 into a whole flock - unless his birds are as docile as the comets. It's worth a try, but I would really watch them close. The comets are outnumbered so if they get picked on it wouldn't be a good thing. Let us know how it goes.

It's going to be a hot weekend! I dread it. The heat just pulls me down so much and I can at least come into the AC. The poor birds just have to deal with that heat. I guess I need to make the pool into a big yummy punch bowl for them. Some ice, fruit punch, a few ice rings.....

I hope everyone has a very happy 4th of July and most importantly, a safe one!

Does anyone shoot fireworks?
We usually just sit outside and watch every one else's. We have a rather open sky view.

Around here there are a few areas that host rather nice, family friendly, and "FREE" firework displays......In Buffalo, SC they have music, and fireworks around the community fishing pond every fourth. In West Springs, SC every Saturday b4 the fourth they have beach/shag music, cookout, and fireworks. I swear it seems as though the firework display goes on for hours!! This year we may attend both.

***In upstate SC where is the cheapest place to buy welded wire, hardware cloth fencing???? Thanks in advance, Nikki

In the midst of the heat, we will be trying to build the permanent roosts in the coop and, most importantly, the run! The chicks are ready to go outside. Last night we gave them pieces of spaghetti and Lou Ann and I laughed so hard. I never knew how great these chicks could be for relaxing at the end of a work day. I'm not sure how long it took for one of them to finally eat a noodle and not just run around with it. I'll post some pictures of the run when it is finished.
If anyone lives near Haywood Rd, their are usually fireworks near Butler Springs Park on July 4th. They are shot off in the ball field behind our church. Someone in the neighborhood there does a phenomenal job. We are talking thousands of dollars worth of fireworks. Not a wimpy show at all. It usually starts around 9:30 or so.

We may be going over to Augusta, GA and watch the fireworks the Army Corps of Eng. shoots over the Savannah River. If not, then there's a minor league baseball game that shoots them after the game on Saturday.

I've got to get my blue coop (8x3) moved to a new location to make the wifey happy. She said she didn't want it to look trashy by coming out the back door and seeing a chicken coop in the back yard.

SO, its going to the farm side of the privacy fence. Basically, the back 2 acres of the property. On a good note, she has been talking about getting a couple cows to put back there as well.

What do you guys know about cows? Head/acre? Feed cost? shelter? I'm also trying to find some land to either lease or buy locally so i can expand

We don't have any plans to go anywhere, but I have a paper to write and turn in next week. Actually I have papers to write for the next 5 weeks so I am thinking my professor might just learn more than she ever wanted to know about chickens! I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! Stay cool, eat well and try to find time to put your feet up:)
