That's a pretty girl you got there!

I know I was hoopin' and hollerin' about finding the $10 hova bator and getting to set my first hatch earlier this month....But Then I found a couple of Brinsea's looking for a home and though they were dirty and nasty as all get out- they cleaned up nice and shiny! Oh, and they were on the affordable side too! Whoot! So there they are. My new to me, Brinsea Octogon 20 and the Brinsea Octogon 20DX with parrot rearing brooder too! Oh the fun I am going to have. A hatchin' we will go, A hatchin' we will go...

I'm going. Bringing a standard Cochin pair. I like the pullet but I'm hoping if I sell/giveaway them together the rooster will get a home easier. Also bringing a pair of ringneck doves and possibly a male serama chick. And if anyone wants one I have an Easter Egger pullet who should be laying soon. Shes brown with the darker neck. Has a real hawk-like look to her.

As for the mini show... I'd participate but I don't know how long I will be there or what to put in the show. Also dont even own show cages. I found out this weekend is Tax free weekend from someone so it might be busy and crazy? At least traffic. I haven't told my husband. It will give him one more thing to whine about.

Hi Ya'll Ive been out a couple of days not able to do any real back page reading... I am so glad the chicken Little is doing well.. I was wondering ... how is Pum Pum? did I miss the news good or bad?

I'm interested in your EE girl..

I know what you mean about your husband whining. I just wait till the day of and pull out his clothes while hes in the shower and tell him ok, get dressed, everything is ready, cars running.. lets go... usually when he gets in the car, I tell him where were going, other wise he just moans and complains for days.. this way.,. problem solved and I only here complaints till we get to where we are going.. Men.. Ha...

Saturday is going to be one crazy day for me.. the TSC swap in the am. a herbal first aid class at noon, a hotdog sale and carwash for ppd fundraisers then onto a friends for a meeting at 7pm.. whew.. I love it... I would much rather be busy than board..
too bad I have nothing for sunday.

I imagine I would have so much fun~ I'm getting tired, this is a late work night for me... I think it's almost time for a shower and then some much needed sleep.

Got them in the hatcher now! One has pipped.

On a sad note, none of the Polish eggs hatched. I opened them today and they had developed but none had pipped and they were dead in the shell.

It is my firm belief that without proper nutrition a lot of chicks wind up this way. I have hatched for many other folks and from what I have experienced with their eggs, brought to me by them, that their hatches often do not do as well as mine.
Not saying I have the perfect recipe but, case in point, just last week I hatched for someone I had not hatched for before, she is the friend of my friend with the still air bator I use for her. Of the 2 dz she brought me from her pens, 2 eggs exploded in the bator (thank goodness it wasn't mine but I still had to clean the stinking thing!) and half did not develop and some did develop (about a dz) but did not pip. She also loses a lot of her chicks. I can't get much info out of her about how she feeds or collects her eggs but it obviously isn't anything like mine.
She is the one I got the Muscovy pair from, Herman and Penelope, parents to my lovely ladies, Kisses and Huggs. Penelope went broody a few months back but none of the eggs hatched so she decided to trade them to me and Penelope just hatched out all the eggs she was left with (from, I am guessing, a snake) and Huggs hatched out 3. So I am saying nutrition.
These Muscovy get laying mash, starter and sweet feed plus bugs and other treats.

Also, I want to add, this is the first time I have had eggs explode in a bator! Disgusting! My house is usually a wreck but that, I swear, is the worse stink ever to have been in my home!

Amy, you are right with the nutrition the bird getd making a difference. I have put so many eggs in with my personal eggs and actually put some of my eggs in with all the shipped and purchased eggs I hatch for a control. It is sad when all of my eggs hatch and none or few of the purchased/shipped ones. I truely think what people feed plays a big part.

Sounds good, Pink.
Sept is a good month to get them in. I have gotten 50 chicks in November before and they did very well. I prefer to use heat lamps during the winter rather than try to figure the fans in this heat.
I was back down at the barn at 11 pm last night because I forgot to adjust the fans. During the day they can deal with them on high and blowing across them but at night I put them on low and not directly on the chicks. It is too much of a worry this time of year but then so is Dec./Jan. so you getting them in Sept is perfect.

Joy is going to bring me some Polish eggs to set. She sells out of her chicks fast. Hers are the beautiful black white crested. Those should hatch for me considering they hatch for her.

My bators all sit in the middle of the house. The one where the eggs exploded was actually in the den near the kitchen. We burned a lot of incense trying to cove up the smell until I could get all the eggs out to clean the thing.

Oh yes! I love Mary's creamed honey! I am buying 10 jars plus some regular honey. It is totally the best honey I have ever tasted. I don't know what it is about the creamed honey that I love so much but it just has a better taste to me.
