I wanna give a huge SHOUT-OUT to my BO(Padma)

She is still Sitting on her babies at night and leads them all around the yard. I was afraid she was gonna give up on them after two weeks, but NOT her. You should see them at night..she tries to get them to go under her, but they are way to big and have to sleep beside her. Momma doesn't want the babies to leave the nest, now I'm not sure if she ever will...

What a Great Momma!!!!

Buff Orps are GREAT mothers! I find that Plymouth Rocks are the same way, totally devoted. I've got two hens with babies right now that are downright scary - a standard game hen and a La Fleche hen - they hiss, spit, growl and when they bite they draw blood. They are fierce and I'm not gonna bother them. I also have another game hen with babies and she is the sweetest thing. She lets me help her, no hissing or spitting. So it's not necessarily the breed just the disposition. But both are good mothers, just one is nicer than the other.

I fully understand if you wish to keep your Cuckoo Marans. They seem to be still rather rare of at least their owners don't want to give them up. LOL I'd be glad to visit some time and see your birds. I've only seen the Cuckoo Maran in pictures and so far my little bunch is bar Rocks and Dominiques. I did not start out to have all barred birds but now that I do I like them. I figured some Cuckoo Marans and I'm done right? No not hardly. Will you have some eggs or chicks for sale by next spring? I think if I start off with young chicks I'll just wait for spring and not have to worry about the cold. Thanks for replying and the offer, Donald

I have Cuckoo Marans, they are english standard and are not feather legged. If you'd like to see them sometime, just let me know. I think they are beautiful. They are very large and have nice color and also have nice large eggs which are not as dark as the black coppers but still very pretty. My hens all went broody this summer so they will still brood their own. They're in full molt right now and don't look quite as nice as usual but I still really like them. I'm reducing my breeder flock a little bit but I haven't even considered getting rid of any of my marans. You can't go wrong having a few marans.

I would love to drop by some time and see your chickens. I think the BC Maran is a lovely bird it's just somehow I have ended up with barred Rocks and Dominique's. Not really by design it just happened that way. Most of the chicks were free so I should not complain about a little off type or color. I find I like my prison stripe chicken now and thought I'd try and stay with the same theme. However, From what I've read people seem to have less problems with the BC Maran than the other Maran types. It seems like mostly size and egg color but I figured there's less of them so less work has been done to improve them and that should be expected. So I guess I'm not yet set in concrete as to having to have Cuckoo Maran or one of the other types. I think it's Aesop the Greek writer that said " It's not just fine feathers that make fine birds".
I'm trying to keep an open mind. And to share a little the whole Maran kick got started early this year when I was reading an article on German cooking. I was looking up dumplings of all things. LOL. I spent three years stationed in Germany and I got to thinking about the killer dark brown chicken eggs and how good the roasted chicken dishes tasted the mother of the German girl I dated made. I got to reading up on European chickens and found a lot of info on the Maran. Now in truth I do not know what chicken breads are found around Stuttgart Germany but the Maran sounds like a great bird to fill the bill for my memories and needs. Hope that makes sense.
On a side note is anyone going to the Georgalina Chickenstock in November? That might be a great time for everyone in the up state to meet up and do some Horse, oops I mean Chicken trading. And thanks for the replies to everyone. If I miss someone it's just the forum is on fire and I'm playing catch up. Donald

Don, I have Wheaten Marans and Blue & Black Marans... both chicks and hatching eggs if you're interested. You can come by and take a look. The Wheatens do not lay as dark an egg as the others but it's still dark. I happen to think they're prettier and have more friendly personalities than the black & blue ones. But I love them all!

There's a Bantam show at Clemson real soon I think. Man I got to find that link but i thinks it's in October. There's a post here on the forums some where with all the details.
There is also a guy trying to get a chickenstock together in November at the Tractor Supply in Agusta, GA. Here's the link for this one.

The Chickenstock could be a great time to get up with the west side Pedmont poeple and some of the up state SC crowd and even mix in with some of those Georgia folks. I posted about the chckenstock on Chickenwhispers face book pape about a month ago but sadly did not get much feed back. One guy contacted me but he's a BYC guy so he would most likely found out anyway. If anyone is interested in the chickenstock please post on the thread. I would love to see it have a good turn out. And no I'm not connected other than I just would like to have some chicken shows close by.

Huckleberryfarm, I hope you feel better soon! Try something OTC if you must. No need to hurt all day.

Now, to show the hipocrit I am, I went without fever or pain reducing meds all day yesterday. I was running just over 100 and everything hurt. Because I had to drive a child to a doctor's appointment (viola! My excuse!), I didn't want to take anything. If I got any more relaxed I was going to fall asleep, which isn't too good for drivng, lol. I went to bed before 9PM. Slept like a baby! Woke up at 2AM for my normal potty run and had this weird feeling: NOTHING hurt! Imagine that. I'm still coughing out junk so by no means am I over this. I feel better than I have since Sunday night.

Thank you again for the prayers for my Mom. She said the anitbiotic was one of the newer penicillin derivatives. Her hands started itching. As she was figuring out that this might be a reaction, she started having trouble breathing. Dad asked what he could do for her. Mom said, "Call an ambulance!" Instead Dad called the doctor's office. They told him to call an ambulance. (Men!) Mom's blood pressure dropped to something like 60/40.

Long story short, she is home and feeling better. She's still sick from whatever it was she needed the antibiotic to fight, but she is VERY happy to be alive!

My three free ranging roosters have come to the front porch (where I currently am). Not sure if they plan to just watch me or start a crowing contest. Haven't had one of those in like, oh, ten minutes or so, lol.
