Amy, are these shipping crates? Where do you get them? If you don't mind me asking? The are a great size! And they look like they will work great!
Debra brings them to me when she comes to pick up her chicks or bring me more eggs to set. She lives in Union and gets them from a guy there. I had posted his info on here at one time, maybe back in April or May. They are terrifically cheap and there are just tons of ideas I have for them but I never seem to enough time to do it all. Finishing one is a major bonus for me!
I put one inside my rooster night coop and when it rains Jolie, the LGD, goes in and lies inside that one. The further she can get from thunder and lightening, the better! I just leave that coop open if it is supposed to storm. She used to go in her dog house but I guess it was too exposed so she gave it up.
I was afraid the crates would only house a few ducks but when I was moving them over the other night I put 10 of the girls in it and still had tons of room. Last night 16 went in one and 5 went in the other one beside it along with a young Swedish duck lady and 6 roosters growing up for the freezer. Still lots of room left.
And When we had all that rain 2 weeks ago (has it been that long?) the inside was dry as could be even with the less angled slope on the first one I built. It has wire around the top for ventilation but I plan to put canvas or heavy plastic to help block some wind in the winter. Ducks are more hardy than chickens about the cold and wet though.
