...I am setting all of mine but I guess because they are pullet only about 1 in 3 seem to be good growers?? Out of 4 set I have 2 have hatched(one was the one laid in the box on transit!!) but the of 3 I have going on lockdown tues only 1 looks great!! Just like this weeks??
oh well...its a shot!!!
I am trying to hatch a few to grow out for spring!!
Yes, pullet eggs can be iffy. The roo may still be trying to get it right. And pullet eggs are still a bit small for something to grow well inside or they may even be missing a yolk. It happens. I just belief the strongest chicks come from eggs that pullets have been laying for a few months. Hard to wait but I have gotten better results in the long run.
I totally understand you wanting to expand you flock though!!
DH was helping me water the chickens tonight and I opened the tractor for the d'Uccles and let them come out while I reached in for the water jug. He was leaned on the top of the tractor and the d'Uccles flew up on the roof and went over to him. He was able to just reach over and start petting the pullets and roo, Casper. He was amazed at how friendly they are. He sees them every weekend when he helps me but seldom has time to actually pet them so I made sure he spent a long time with them as I pretended to have so much to do to their tractor.
He was enjoying them and held each one and petted them and even when they were just on the roof he would reach over and pet them down their backs and they didn't flinch away or fly off. He is getting very attached!
DH caught up Adonis, my BO roo and some of the hens from the free range flock all while they screamed and carried on and fought to get away. He even caught up some of the Guinea keets running around but after all that ruckus he was super impressed by the d'Uccles and so enjoyed them! Yes, my scheme is working!
Too funny...I am also having good luck on the chicken love conversion as my DH the other night when my son said "the chick in the bator is on its back stuck"...he jumped out of his chair fussing about stupid chickens but we all know where I found him....yep,watching to be sure the new baby got turned over ok through the window!!
