South Carolina

Gvilledh, those are great pictures! I love the close up.

I got into chickens "this time" because my middle child was facinated with my brother's flock in North Charleston. We started with eggs from Josh. Five hatched and turned into three roos and two hens. A feed store had started pullets, so I brought four home. Then I hatched some more eggs from Josh's flock. Then MyPet Chicken had an all girl special. . . .

It's been pure madness since. And I'm loving it.

A chick with FILTHY (muddy) feet landed on my head this afternoon. I pulled it down and put it on my forearm. "Are you my buddy now?" instead of "Ack! My hair" shows how far I've come.

Sweet dreams, all!

I got into chickens by divine intervention when a few were let loose in my yard 2 months ago...today I crawled thru short makeshift coops/runs and "walk ins" cleaning and having the same poopie experiences as you described and for some higher reasoning...It was exactly what I need! I love every moment! I love all my chickens...young and old! And I love this site and everyone is sooo friendly and helpful! CHICKENS ROCK!!!

Let's just say... I remember getting off the school bus at the "new" house in early 1973. It was special because Grandma met me. We had been in the house for a few weeks when the Great Blizzard of 73 hit. Then the wall fell out of the livingroom! The pair of windows had a leak. The freezing was too much and the rotten wall fell out taking the windows with it. We had cardboard between us and EIGHTEEN inches of snow. That was the first time I remember making snowmen.

The blizzard of 1973....I lived in a trailer park behind Burnside Dodge at Rivers Ave and Remount! I remember it so well because my dad had set me on the back of our Dodge Charger and I slipped off and they had to dig me out of the snow.

PS---I cant figure out this quote thing.....so this is a response to Gold Griffn!

I am so sorry! I totally understand.
Our power went out this morning at 4:30 am and didn't come back on until 8 am. I put heat packs in all the brooders but had no idea what to do about the bators other than cover them. My hatcher dropped down to 80 but I had heat packs in for the already hatched chicks. I never opened the Sportsman to see what it was like.
Yeah, a generator is real nice to have when DH will keep gas in it! He had only been in bed an hour when the power went off and I couldn't get him up to go get more. Geez! You should have seen me outside at 5 am trying to siphon gas out of HIS car to put in the generator in my house coat and slippers. He never keeps enough gas in there though to get out so that was a loss.
I lost a few little chicks down at the barn even with all those heat packs in with them. I realized it wasn't just the heat from them being on them that helps but the air they breathe. I had the brooders covered in blankets but it didn't help as I lost 6 chicks.
We'll see what the bator shows me now. I will candle tonight and for the next few days to see what I have growing or dying.

Thanks, Duke Energy! I hear we are getting a rate increase as well!

Off to get more gas for the generator myself and restock my heat pack supply.

Oh no, so sorry to hear that Amy. I'm already fretting over power losses that I know are coming my way. I'm actually thinking of buying a 2nd generator so we can have enough power to keep the chicken lights on. Like you, we have a well that pulls a lot of power but we need water. We also need heat and then there is the incubators. Anyway, my husband does the same thing and makes me so mad. I'll fill up the gas cans for emergencies and then DH will use them to fill up his car! It doesn't occur to him that if our power is out the local gas stations might not have power either. Men! So what caused your power to go off?

Ccw2005, look at the lower right of any of our posts. Press the "Quote", um not a button, word. This opens a new page for you to post and the quote appears at the top. Most of us answer on the bottom.

I am on an email list that encourages us to "snip" out the portion of the message that we are not responding to. Then we are encouraged to reply on top so others don't have to scroll, scroll, scroll to find our response. So anyway, if I snip away part of someone's post I'm quoting, I try to mention it.

We were all new once. Keep asking questions and you'll be in the thousands of posts in no time!

Btw, I grew up in Wando Woods. Sounds like you were just down Dorchester Road from me! My mother and father both spent their teenage years on Woodlawn Avenue and watched the people build I-26 behind their houses.

Whew! I am wore out from all that and I didn't even do it! LOL

Shoot, Amy...this is just a list of your regular daily chicken chores probably...LOL

Nuh uh! I never wash that dog.

What a yucky job!

I'll clean brooders, scoop out the duck coops, dump and fill the pools (all 5 of them), clean water containers and refill....yadda, yadda, yadda...before washing the dog! Did you see how big my dog is?

Great photos! Love that SLW girl. I just find them so striking! Your BOs are such a pretty gold color. I sold a pullet yesterday because the person just loved that gold but I didn't sell any of my GL or SLW that he wanted.

Did you see it is supposed to rain again on Friday?

I have no idea why the power went out again. It was out about 2 months ago or so but was still hot weather so we were fine on that.
When DD got to school late she did not even need a pass to get to class since half the school was coming in with the same deal. She had to wear her JrROTC uniform and put her hair up and though she got up in time she could not see well enough in lantern light to get ready in time.

Yeah, somehow, our DH's do not seem to have the same priorities we do. That is where my 2 gas cans full of gas went, too. Right into his car. Ever heard of a gas station, dude? By golly he was out getting gas yesterday and filling the generator and getting it ready again. I don't worry over the well pump since I keep so much water stored back. We have even run a hose from the neighbor's house over here to fill jugs when the pump could not run.
