I am constantly checking the fertility on my breeder eggs. If they don't sell, I hatch them myself. I also break open a few and check that way. So the eggs I sell should never be all infertile. There can still be a clear egg every now and again but it should never be more than the odd one. I've only had 2 people complain about receiving eggs that didn't hatch. One person claimed all but 1 were infertile - but he only bought 6 bantam eggs and they were shipped to Washington state. I sent 8 eggs and he had 1 chick hatch. He admitted being new to using the incubator. Anyway, I offered to ship the same amount of eggs back to him for only the cost of shipping if he wanted to try again. I made the same offer to the 2nd person even though her eggs were all fertile, she just had a bad hatch rate (lots of dead in shell chicks). I don't consider that my fault but I try to keep the customers happy. I have found that some just don't want to be happy - no matter what you offer. I do not refund money and I make that clear on my auctions. I can't afford to do that as there are some very dishonest people out there that would take advantage. I've also spent a lot of money to really reputable people and received eggs that none hatched. That is disappointing but you never know what those eggs go through before they get here. I have about a 50% success rate with shipped eggs. Some do really well and some don't do well at all. But I've also bought eggs locally that I didn't have any luck hatching either. Hatching is a gamble. That's why it's so exciting when it finally works and you get lots of babies.

thanks for ya'll answering.. I of course have no plans on buying eggs.. No incubator and to be honest, I think I would get tooo hooked on hatching if I did, then I would be in lots of trouble with the hubby..ahhahha. the thought of paying sometimes a lot of money for fancy-dancy eggs is scary, especially if shipped. I do understand that buying eggs to hatch is still a lower price than buying a chick or a started pullet. and I am sooo guilty of liking fancy dancy chickens..ahhah.. So if its ok with you guys... I would rather buy chicks or started hens from you guys than eggs... I know yup Im chicken hhahhaha...

hugs and smiles to everyone... its a gorgeous day what are you doing in the house online????... oh wait im in the house online.!!!!., hahahhah I need to go out and play...

Mille fleur d'uccles are easy to sex right after hatching. The males have " stripes" down thier backs and the girls dont. Hope that helps

I have never noticed stripes on the d'uccles but I will start looking for that. It would be wonderful to know at hatch what I have.

I actually remember when I hatched the d'Uccle eggs for DeeAnn that about half had stripes and the others did not. I just could not remember which she had told me were males and which were females. Can't wait to hatch some again!!

I just love Cowboy for his great personality but he is very handsome, too. You know I don't do blue Mottled too much, though I want to put some girls with my Frizzle roo. I just am not much of a blue bird lover. And though I love golds, I don't care for buff Orps as much.
I do love the blue Mottleds here now though. The kids from Cowboy are striking in color and pose and Cowgirl is a dainty little love package. I enjoy handling her and can't wait until she gives me kids from Dan the Man.
But I am really trying to get my buff Mottled project going. Here is my best pullet I have created so far.....

Not a bad job on the lacing! Very pretty!!

Aaawwww! Thank you.
The color and pattern are actually easy to put on birds, it is conformation that makes it all so darned difficult, I think.

It is a lot of fun to play around with breeding and make new projects but also a lot of work. I enjoy the fruits of others hard work but also like to make my own breeding projects. All that money into education needs to be put into work somewhere. It makes me happy to sell some of my hard work for a nice sum of money. I feel like I actually earned it though I know that everything I sell took a lot of hard work to get there to that point. But there is that feeling of accomplishment that gives me the warm fuzzy feeling. I don't feel like I wasted too much of my parent's money by not finishing college.

Amy Nadine, I am so proud of my girls I got from you.. It took them a while to get the hang of laying but now are laying beautiful Big eggs, now if I could just stop them from being tree huggers. hahah.. little heather chickens.. hahha and the little Rooster.. Uncle Daddy, is gorgeous, he reminds me of the rooster pictures, of roosters, on dishes and hand towels.

Were you able to sell Midas's brothers from Bo? did your hen hatch another clutch any girls?

good to hear that you had a good day of sales.

oh and HI everyone.. not trying to ignor anyone.. hope yall weekends gonna be great..

Okay, I hate to interrupt the conversation, but I have a new question. Does anyone in South Carolina know of a recycling program in their neighborhood that will take the #5 plastic feed sacks that seem to be the new standard for chicken feed? I know some people are turning them into tote bags and I even saw one person who says they are burning them in their wood stove. (Not sure that's such a good idea) But I just want to get this stack of sacks into a recycling bin so they don't end up in the landfill or on a ship to China. Yeah, I know an environmentalist in South Carolina is rarer than hen's teeth or Dodo poop, but here I am.

I don't know of any place to recycle but I use mine for holding chicken manure when I clean out the coops. Most of my feed sacks are paper, the plastic ones work better for storing manure to sell. You can sell the bags of "organic manure" for gardening.

Sorry to hijack, but don't you have to compost the manure first?

Oneofseven, some poor people do not own chickens (imagine that!) and they need the poop to go in their compost pile. I've seen bags of rabbit poop at chicken swaps for sale. I think it was $5 for one of those 50 pound bags half full.

Hey, the food came outta the bag. The, um, food waste goes back in the bag! Works for me. Or would, but my mosey girls try to climb in and on the bag while I'm trying to scoop. Turdy birds, lol.
