Hope you get a good turn out. The weather looks like it will be nice. A couple of us ladies are going to the Clemson show so I know we won't be down that way but I am sure others that live closer will make it. There should be some good chicken selling going on this Sat. all over SC!

hey do we know is Robert and Kris coming? so he can bring up name tags.. hahhah I'm getting very excited about the show.. of course it couldn't be a worse time for me money wise.. It will be a lot of window shopping but I can get names and numbers for spring...
I sure hope ya'll have a good turn out in Aiken too bad its the same day.

money is a problem all around...my problem is I can come up with $3, $6, $10, etc... at a time and my chickens seem to keep multiplying faster than my coops or supply of feed!

But not to worry...THEY will eat before I do! (I can live on egg sandwiches!

of course Baiting deer in is illegal in Sc.. so I dont suggest trying it.. my husband knew a guy that did and wheww they ripped him a new one... hugh fines and they confiscated his riffles big big.. serious punishment..

My horses love acorns
. but they get a lot of gas from them.

. and its like being around a peanut butter factory.. PEEEAA wheww..

only so much of that smell you can take.. and I haven't had a PB& J sandwich since they started eating them ahha..

. and this year there is an abundance, which if you go with -wives tales -, means its going to be a hard cold winter.. when mother nature provides more nourishment to animals.. early Watch out.. she's a come'in !

How precious! Mine haven't figured out the house yet! They go into the front pasture and run around the pastures but no where near the house.....as I say....yet.

Didnt take mine long to figure out I go out the front as often as the back........so they hear my voice and know where to find me if I am not on the deck.

If I don't go out every morning, they have been known to stand on the deck (turkeys & guineas) and look in the kitchen window.

Oh and one turkey - decided he would look in the bathroom window which is easy to do from the deck railing....I guess he thought he was gonna come in the bathroom and flew up on the roof over the bathroom window and tried to look in!

Now I can't even walk on the drive without shoes........turkeys poop huge piles

Old wives tale is that you can predict the winter by the persimmon seeds. I did it this year for the second year.

Just found out last year we have a persimmon tree!
lol.png

Take persimmon seed, cut it open, and inside is a kernal thingy.... its shape..... a spoon means heavy wet snow, spoon = shovel - a fork is a mild winter, not much snow - a knife is an icy/freezing winter - knife because the icy/winds are bitterly cold and cutting.

ETA: ripe seeds work best.............mine was not quite ripe that day..........

Inquiring minds want to know?!? What do the persimmons do?

it is actually the seeds....... cut open
smile.png

I will see if I still have any persimmons left tomorrow and if so I will grab for pics to show you what I mean.......

If the kernel is spoon-shaped, lots of heavy, wet snow will fall. Spoon = shovel!
If it is fork-shaped, you can expect powdery, light snow and a mild winter.
If the kernel is knife-shaped, expect to be "cut" by ice, cutting winds.

Fun info:

The 2010 Farmer’s Almanac gave its persimmon report from N.C. in late September. The N.C. seed reveled a spoon.

As did mine......and I just read this

Weather Folklore

I have noticed these in bold this year, too:

Other “Weatherlore” suggest winter will be colder if heavy crops of berries are found on holly and dogwood trees, rolling thunder is heard echoing in the late fall, trees shed their leaves before their color change is complete, and if chimney smoke flows toward the ground.
