South Carolina

Just wanted to share some information in case anyone here is interested. A friend of mine does a winter Farmer's Market every year and the first one will be Sunday, Nov 20 from 2:00 - 6:00. There will be different farmers there selling their products. They usually have raw milk, butter, fresh veggies, fresh breads etc. I will be there selling my eggs. Native Meats is selling all kinds of pasture raised meat (chicken, turkey, beef, pork). Rollie (Native Meats owner) will be giving farm tours. If you're interested and want additional info you can check my website for the address.

Ahhhhh! Welcome to my world!
When we went to PA for a week to the Guinea Pig Specialty show it cost me more for a sitter to come in and care for the piggies and farm animals than the rental van and fancy hotel! So worth it though! But that cruise I was going to take last year went south when I priced a sitter again. Oh well, I love home! There's no place like home.

Hope you can work something out. Your kids need family, too.

We haven't been anywhere in 4 years. No way I could leave all these chickens for someone else to care for. I am trying to simplify a bit so that one day soon I could get back down to Edisto. If anyone has any ideas for bigger drinkers/feeders that don't require daily attention I would love to hear about them.

We have automatic waterers in all our runs and those big 35-lb feeders from Cutler Supply. My breeding flock could make it for several days on their own with the exception of eggs being collected. It's the little ones that are the problem!

Suzanne - do your auto waterers freeze in winter? We haven't installed any yet because I was afraid I would just have to disconnect everything in Fall. I'll check out the 35 pound feeders. I have one 25 pound feeder and I have to fill it everyday. I'm getting ready to "build" a big feeder for my layer flock out of a rubbermaid trash can. It will hold approx 150 pounds of food. It's basically a trash can with sealing lid and I cut holes in the bottom of it and screw it onto a tray. The tray is the bottom of a 50 gallon drum. The food spills out into the tray and they eat. The problem I have is keeping the food tray dry as something that big will have to sit outside the coop.

We didn't have them last winter so I don't know. I guess we'll find out! I'm hoping if they do, they'll thaw quickly. I don't have a ton of birds in each coop, so the 35-lb feeders last a long time. I probably have 20 at the most. I have a 300-lb feeder from when we had our big laying flock.

Cute!!

Now what I would do

1 - either pin up or trim her crest. She is in a new place and can't see much with that crest so that may be part of why she is not moving.
2 - go ahead and remove the roost. Silkies prefer the ground. That may be why she is not moving ...
3 - Check her for mites and lice. Treat if needed.
4 - treat for worms if you dont know when she was treated last

ETA: I cant see her feet good and cant tell a lot from pics but she is a cute white silkie

Good advice all around. Silkies generally do not roost. When I have one stuck in one place, like just at the fence, it usually means they can't see. Just trim her bangs a bit. She looks decent quality except her feet but who cares? Nice! Is she your only silkie? I can't remember. If so, you should get a few more for her and I know just the place.

DD got me a white roo somewhere today and a black hen...I have a bue roo and black roo I adopted from DD. But I have them together outside and Sapphire inside in a very large dog crate...I will get the ones from DD tomorrow. The white roo will come inside with Sapphire in the crate and I am going to try out the black hen in with the two boys outside...

DH put a really big piece of pipe in the middle and worked some other conduit pipe over it. It is enough of a bow to shed water though one corner get rain and I have to push it out -- which I am sure I will have to do today. I bet your could do it with PVC pipe which would be lighter--DH just used what we had on hand. We have roofing tin on a couple of the kennels that works good and one tarp I have a 2 x 4 holding it up in the center so it sheds water--works very well and there is enough pressure on the board that it will not fall. I use pretty much what ever I can that works to get a pitch in the tarps after the dogs kennel collapsed.

My kennels just have plastic netting to keep out hawks. I don't really worry about weather. But they do have small coops in them for protection. I mostly use the kennels for the run part. They can go in the coop if it's raining.

Thanks! I think that may be the best way to go. I just scored a couple wooden shipping crates from work I am going to work on making a mini coop/roost area for them and now I think I should put it in the dog kennel and just leave the tarp off the top (I do have wire up there under the tarp)...Do you think some fairly large Ameraucaunas will go in shipping crates? they are 4ft x 4 ft x 2 1/2 tall. I thought I would turn one tall wise on it's side for the roost part and one as is for the nesting side and attach together with an open door to go between...hard to draw a picture with words!
