Sorry, I just have to ask this....did those people you bought from at the Jockey Lot have their permit from Clemson? They will have to pay a steep fine from the Clemson chicken police, if not!

I had to say it! I am so sorry but that is too funny! I will be poking fun about that, especially at you, for ages.

And you SHOULD ramble on about your chickens. That is what this thread is all about. We love to hear about your chickens!

Welcome here and glad you found this site! I am still pretty new here and to chickens but if you hang around here you will find anything you want and things you didn't know existed AND everyone is so nice and open and helpful! Congrats on the decision to farm!!! LOL

Pat, I answered you on the FB page also, but Dorkings are a very desirable bird from my stand point and they are a very old breed from what I have read. I just looked them up again this morning and see that they are a 5 toed breed. If his fit the description of a true Dorking I would think they would be a very good breed to have--as I said on FB, I would buy some hatching eggs from you! I have actually been looking for someone that sell their eggs. Let me know if you do get some but check them out and make sure he has not introduced any other breeds and that they at least still meet basic standards. If they do I would go for it--and you can sell me some eggs!!

Thanks for the input! I plan to visit after we get past the holidays. He is the Father of a lady I work with and since me and her are in our 50's and she was raised with these I believe he may just have some good birds! It's all he has and likes! LOL...I'll let you know. If nothing else I can get us some hatching eggs

I have dressed out and eaten silkie (and dark-skin silkie crosses). They didn't taste a bit different from any *other chicken* --- just all dark meat. It could have been my imagination, but even mature rooster seemed more tender than *other chicken* of that age.

My DH is looking a little green this evening with me talking about this--

Maybe if I sneak it in on him one evening. When cooked the meat is just dark? Not black? How about the bones?

Pigmentation is a skin trait. People of African descent have red muscle tissue and white bones. Likewise for silkies (relative to normal chickens).
