I have been trying to catch up this morning -- sorry to here what problems the cold has been bringing. We had some pretty solid ice here this morning but probably not anything compared to what you guys up north are dealing with.

Now if we could all get rid of this flue here so I could go out and get something done....

4 days ago I tried to move my 2 BLRW gals that are close(one laid first egg today) to laying in with my big flock...they have been terrorized and I split the coop and closed the door first 2 days...had a good day yesterday but my DD just found a bloodbath out there and both girls have a hole eaten in thier back...one is really bad but she immediatly came out to peck and eat when we run others into other part of run and closed door. While we were moving birds around to make an open spot for them and getting forst aide together one laid her first egg on ground.I moved the silkie back to big kennel I was gonna use for Ameraucana situation and put my 2 BLRWs in the little run he was in.My BIG QUESTION IS...WHAT KIND OF ANTIBIOTIC CAN I PUT IN THEIR WATER TO HELP FIGHT INFECTION?? I cleaned wounds with saline water and put blue kote on...but still worried...these are my 2 from farmer John!!! AGHHHH

Just not a good day on my farm!!

He was asking $300 for them. But he emailed me and was saying "They're getting really big. I need to sell them" Stuff like that. He might take less.

That's not bad at all...

I'm gonna talk to my husband tonight. See if he wants to pursue it. I'm just not having my chickens slowly slaughtered!!

I'm sorry for your loss, But Please help me learn from your experience...

I thought a hen would be able to withstand the cold without a heat lamp when feathered out. are silkies different?

I don't want to seem un sympathetic, but I do want to learn. We don't currently have silkies, but you never know.

Honestly last winter even with all the snow.. I did NOTHING but hang a normal bulb in with them...no coop either..... just a windbreak and lamp. I don't think I lost any due to the weather...I lost some in the spring....but to a dog.

I did have to rescue one who got into the part of the pen that was uncovered and he was butt deep in a snow drift

The feathers are different on silkies...actually don't even look like feathers...looks like fine hair or silk threads. Silkies can't really fly either, because of the feathers,,,it is more a bunch of flapping & jumping

This is my lavender boy I lost to a dog or raccoon or something last year...Can you tell how the feathers are in this picture? Only one I have handy without logging into facebook.... you can see some on my FB page which is linked over on the side as my website.

Dag nab it! That is frustrating as all get out! Sorry about that!

I have been seeing a lot of Great Pyrs on Craigs List lately. Most of the time they have been house dogs and are not as helpful with chickens. The ones that are good with livestock go quickly!
I would prefer an Anatolian next time but if I come across a Great Pyr that seems like it would fit in I would take it. Hair aside, they are great dogs! Although DH tells Jolie she is only a good Pyr, not great! LOL She knows he is teasing her!
