Susanne, you need to plant trees - lots of trees. They will make a wind break and help in weather like this.

We had a few big trees but we lost most of them over the last year in storms. They just snap in half. We had a huge one down by the pond behind the trailer and we lost it last summer. Now it's a stump.

Well, the second appraisal came in. And it's over $100,000 less than the cost to build the house.

I don't know how any home builders are making it right now. This whole mortgage/appraisal situation is ridiculous. I'm so sad. Between renting this trailer and paying storage for all of our stuff, we're throwing $1000 out of the window every month. I really love my farm but it has seemed like every time we try to do something permanent out here, a door closes. So frustrating! Maybe God knows a tornado is coming that will wipe it out and doesn't want us here. If so, I wish he would tell me! Or just tell us what to do.

I know this is not a life-threatening situation and we are very grateful for all we have. I just want to be settled somewhere. Somewhere safe.

Looks like it's going to be windy again tomorrow! ARGH!!!!!!!

You could use the windy day to ride around the farm and see if you can find a less windy (if that is possible) spot.

I cannot say I know what you are going through.... I don't, our house was 2 years old when we bought it.... and that was in '98.

We talked a lot about having one built. Even everyone in the family helping out to save on cost and hiring out most of the work via family or family friends, it was still going to take more time than we wanted.

We even considered a mobile home or a modular home. I spent 3 years looking at plans, blueprints, modulars, and double & triplewides. I remember if I could have combined 4 or 5 doubles and/or a couple of triples in the layout I wanted, it would be perfect.

In the end we found this house, for not much more than a brand new triple wide. I have 1700-1800 sq ft. now.

Is it possible to renegotiate some of the ideas on the dream home? Not in construction itself but maybe the size or some other extra like cabinets, paints, flooring?

With this house, I have smaller bathrooms than I wanted. Kitchen too, although it is big enough, it is the galley style and I basically can only rearrange the cabinet contents....cannot figure out how to remodel it at all since it is pretty much open on both ends....NOTHING like my dream kitchen. I think the other 2 bedrooms are a little smaller, also but I do have an attic and an unfinished basement. AND two closets in the master bedroom! One is a His/hers type deal, the other is just a walk-in closet.

I would be worried about my perfect home being destroyed by weather , so I would probably settle on a smaller home and let my furnishings and such make it more :) Although my furnishings are almost as old as my house now ROFL!

The sad thing is we are doing a modular home which is so much less than a stick-built house. The cost per square foot to build is around $80. That's pretty reasonable. The way the market is now it's impossible to build on land. Maybe in a subdivision it's easier. Oh, well. Something will work out. It always does. :)
