South Carolina

Well I have had the same experiences.I have driven home eggs from about an hour away and none even developed.and I have had some from Missouri that did great.guess I am stressed. I guess you fail if you don't try anyway.thanks for the positive spin on it.I needed it.

I have bought lots of shipped eggs and shipped lots of eggs. I would say in general the experience is positive. You won't get 100% hatch but I don't even get that on my own eggs. I've had mostly positive experiences on both ends.

Amy, I feel the same way about BYC. I am downloading Google Chrome now. I will see if it is any better. The jumpy pages drive me crazy. I will click on something just about the time the page jumps. End up in Fla. instead of NC.

I am spending more time and reading a lot less on here. But I am trying to keep up with SC and Silkie thread.

One of my SQ white silkies laid her first egg Fri. and another Sat. Hope to get fertile, normal sized eggs soon so I can start hatching.
I don't think the roo has figured out his part yet. He has made a nest but no dancing or ---. I hope I do not have to learn AI to get chicks from them.

Have a good evening everyone

My white Duccle is not laying again and I noticed yesterday that there are white feathers all in the coop...just like 6 weeks ago...she has not molted to the point of looking like a ragdoll and she is very perky so I guess we are having a sequel to the other light molt !! I miss my eggs though!
Sent you a pm.
Do you know if the Mennonite bakery is still open in cross hill? Man I love their cakes!

I have three molting.I thought it was weird too.

I haven't had any problems with th jumping pages in Firefox, but I have read on here that the forum does really well with Chrome. My pages loaded a little slower the first day or so, but I haven't really noticed it since then. Now that I have written that, they will probably start taking forever to load!

I am not having the slow loading or jumpy pages and I do not run google chrome?? But I do have a 3 month old powerhouse of a laptop! I cant tell you much about it as I am not good at puters but it was the next to the highest memory and price that dell has...the only one at the time bigger had the flip touch screen

!! I am sure though that at 3 months old it is about obselete but I hoped with the investment I would have it a while before I get upset with performance.I LOVE IT! And think...BYC was the main reason I wanted a good upgrade

How many times would you guys try getting shipped eggs before giving up? I know all about the gambles, but dh is not convinced the eggs will stop developing somewhere between day 1-21 because they were shipped. There are lots of other things that can go wrong during that time but if you really wanted a certain breed how many tries would you do? I am getting some from way off and 1 st try the po scrambled them, now I am on try two and I know there will be another. I am hard headed and not willing to give up yet.

I never give up. I've had shipped eggs that hatched zero, I've also hatched 2 roosters out of a dozen eggs. Then I've waited a year or more to have hens to put with those roosters. But sometimes this is the only way to get the breeds you really want. I've also bought eggs right here in town and had zero hatch from them too. Hatching eggs is a gamble anyway you do it.

I am sorry I am not keeping up with the thread as well as I used to but BYC has slowed down something awful and loading pages on here takes forever. It is all I can do to get all the PMs answered and I feel I am not keeping up as well as I should with those. My computer is about as fast as they make them but BYC is really bogged down with all this stuff thats added. As soon as I start to read something the page wants to bounce all over the place and trying to read several back pages is a nightmare.

To the person I wanted to answer on bad hatches.....I think I read that humidity was 20-30%. That is way too low for this time of year. It needs to be around 50% for the first 18 days and 60% the last few days. try that and see if it doesn't help.

I haven't had the bouncing problem. I use internet explorer. The website seems to be working fine for me, just taking a lot of getting used to on my part.

Have a good evening everyone

I use Chrome and haven't really had an issue with BYC being slow. Maybe that will help!

I'm hoping to start a Certified Beekeeping Class here in Greenwood on February 2nd. Then I'll need some bees!

Thats the thing...in that one group I used a huge tote and I changed the bedding every 3 days...I change the paper now daily? Maybe I just had a bad batch...I had hatched my eggs and a mix of one from here and there from several other people also...I have been fine since though!!

ETA: My chicks are in my house so keeping brooders clean and smell non existant is HUGE for me
I have a friend down the road that does not like shavings. That is why I posted. We discussed the same subject yesterday, and it was on my mind. I promise you that she keeps her stuff squared away, and she had problems twice. I keep wondering if I will have my day, but I am reluctant to change when I haven't had any problems. I like the shavings for the compost piles. I guess I am trying to recover some of that expensive feed. I do move the birds out when they don't need the extra heat. I have hatched earlier than I normally do, so I wonder what my limits are. I can't move them out as fast as I would if this was April.
