I really was hoping I wouldn't have to make this post. I lost my little d'Anver girl this morning. She put up a tough fight but her little body just gave up. I went down to check her this morning as I always do just praying she'd be ok. She wasn't gone yet, but very close. I wrapped her up in a little blanket and took her with me to work (luckily I work at an animal hospital). She passed on the way there. Breaks my heart. I cried like a baby and felt so silly for it. I know that losing some is a part of having animals...but these little bantys are my all time favorites. I just love them. I had named her Mary. What absolutely KILLS me is that upon VERY close observation, she still had mites around her comb/head. That's when I really started crying. I had treated her 2 times for mites and had been keeping a close eye on her. I guess it makes me feel responsible for her not making it. Those stupid things were so freakin tiny and apparently very good at hiding. I'd been checking her all over every day. They were nowhere but her head. I guess you live and learn. I'll miss that little girl. The pair left seem completely healthy. They've always looked better as far as their comb color than her. Makes me think maybe she'd had something going on for a while and it just finally got the best of her. Sorry this post is so long...just had to vent. Needless to say, my day got started off on the wrong foot...

I really hate that for you and for her! She sure was a fighter and you were very vigilant trying everything you could! I really thought you had her on the up side of recovery!

I had planned on going to the NPIP class....but looks like it'll have to wait until next time. My spending money is a little tight at the moment..and I really really really want to order my new incubator this friday..so the class will have to wait!

I was also but then I was asked to teach a class that weekend and decided that I can do the fall class or get someone to certify my flock...if I decide to...I may not get the offer on the other again if I had turned it down!!

Patsy, I am loving these Dorking chicks! They have a very unique personality. They are more sensitive to outside noise though then the other chicks I have but love attention. When I open the door of their pen the cockerels leap out in my arms. At first I thought this was a food thing and it might still be but they do it whether they have lots of food or not. They are really a lot of fun! How are yours doing? I want to see pictures!

Today I hope to get the Australorp out to the hutch and out of the tub they are in. The are eating machines! And with a lot of food comes.....

Hope everyone is doing well out there along with all you animals!

I have 3-4week old chicks. With the weather we are having will I be able to move them out to the hen house with a night light soon?
It was about 88 here today. I had them in their crate and had to bring them in because they were overheated. Panting and laying in the shade.

We have 3 week olds and the they are in the brooder, which happens to be in the house. I did put them outside today under a shady tree, but I still bring them back into the house. They should be in a 85 - 80 environment at 3-4 weeks old. The evenings are still in the 50's so dont know that your heat lamp will keep the hen house warm enough. Thats our experience. Hope others will chime in what they do.
