I like your signature! I am worried that I have a whole bunch of boys myself! Mine are only 4 weeks though so a little more time to know for sure. I am impressed with those wattles and combs!! I figure if all 12 of mine end up boys(what are the odds they would ALL be boys?) then I can fire up the incubator again! lol!
I have nine adorable almost seven week old boys that need a home. If anyone is interested, I am in Kershaw Co.

Rule of thumb. on the floors. nothing that will absorb and hold water. like hay or straw or even sawdust that will cause mold and or mildew. sand, pine shavings wicks dry pretty fast but has a tendancy to have wet spots.. To be perfectly honest. for my money. you can not beat a good old fashion dirt floor. it rakes clean, provides trace minerals, all the grit you chickens will ever need. wont get as cold as a raised floor in the winter.and they can scratch down to cool dirt in the summer. and it just feels natural for the chickens to scratch in. chickens and dirt go together like creamy peanut butter and jelly. smooth to work with and just plain sweet for the birds.
OK well we are building a tractor and it has a floor to it(plywood with linoleum on it) so from all the suggestions I am thinking sand!

OK so how do we finish our coop? This is a NEVER ending project. Every time we think we have it figured out then something else comes up. It is CRAZY! I am still putting my chicks up in a brooder every night! I am SOOOOO ready to have a normal coop. It just seems like there are so many little things to do--most of it to make the coop safe for the chicks. Fill in gaps, secure doors and things like that. Today we went to Lowes and as we were leaving dh said that was all we should need. So we get home start working and now the list of what we still need is as long if not longer than today's list! Ugh and talk about expense! just crazy I tell ya!!!

Hey... So here is a random question.. Not even sure if its an "ok" question to ask... But how many of you will be showing at the state fair in the fall? Is there a secret BYC signal I should be wearing to make it easier to identify fellow BYC members... Like a bat signal, but instead a chicken signal? I know it's technically a competition.. So I was not sure if that is a kosher question to even ask amongst the showing folks.

Wanted to post pics of my babies I hatched out That are now big and beautiful and They have just now started interacting with the other chickens
Lacey(aka lil runty) Ghost, Mrs'Lyles......Emmett in the backgound wanting out of the d'Uccle habitat.

eating a frozen melon.

I use pine in one coop...it stays dry and doesn't get wet from the rain. I had hay in the nest boxes and if it got even a little wet when it fell out of the nestbox..it stinks(or atleast I hate that smell)..I do rake the pine(with mint and eculyptus and DE) mixed in about once a week just to keep things mixed up and put alittle fresh in..then in feburary I spread it all over my front yard where the chickens are not.

I use sand in my d'Uccle habitat, the actual coop has a wire bottom with a removeable pan under it for easy clean. I LOVE the SAND!!!! just rake it around from time to time and when it rains it dissolves the poo!!!! AND it's all dry. I love it!
Hope this helps!
Avonshire I agree with Yancy...I have sand and in my raised coops we put vinyl flooring down then put sand on top...a little kitty litter scoop keeps them all clean!!

Sam--thanks! We got the linoleum installed yesterday as per your suggestion! So where do you buy your sand? Is it play sand? I probably asked this already but I forget!!!

Gosh, you guys have all been busy in this heat! Hubby was back in the hospital. He had a heart attack. His bypass grafts didn't take and they can't fix them. I will be selling a lot of chickens. Now to decide who goes and if any stay. Don't know how to pick who I want to keep. So much work and energy put into them. I am so attached to them.

Oh! I am so sorry to hear this! I pray you all will find a satisfying solution to this problem. There is nothing worse than having a beloved family member, especially your spouse, to be in bad condition. I will keep you all in my prayers.
