Oh, & in our nest boxes we use shredded paper from our shredder!!!
How does that last? I have thought of it but not tried it...how long does it make it before it disintegrates...or gets narly and needs changing? Also do you have a shredder that makes the chopped up paper or the "old style" that makes the long pieces of paper? Inquiring minds want to know...LOLOL

it depends on the junk mail you get. in a nest box, it lasts till it gets dirty. some nest boxes it may last months in others may need cleaning every week. I have 9 hens that like to use one nest box till one gets broody and runs the others to the other nest boxes.

AMY AMY AMY.....I know I'm on the list of the Frizzles.....BUT now I don't know which list I want to be On...Just Beautiful!!!!

LOL This is the Mottled girl I showed you when you were here last time. The roo you may not have seen. He just recently filled out and blossomed. I have his full brother but I do not like him as well as this handsome fella.

I will hatch some chicks out and let you see them but they change so much while maturing. I took a photo of the 2 blue Frizzles that are free ranging with the hen that hatched them out. They are not so blue anymore. One is turning white and the other is turning brown with white tips on the feathers. I just enjoy the Frizzle and Sizzle projects so much.

How are your eggs doing under the hen now? Going to hatch soon?

I am trying to get some new pictures of the young chicks. I am going to have to take my camera with a fast lens tomorrow because they are busy, busy. I did get some great ones of CopperTop. Amy said from day one he was a roo, and now she says he is because he is so sweet and such a charmer. He is truly the sweetest of all the chicks and the only one content to just sit on my leg and watch the world go by. Too bad we aren't keeping him...

Look at those feathered legs!
This one has roo coloring but the comb right now says girl. We shall see! I know you wanted lots of girls for the flock so I did my best and waved my magic wand. Sometimes it goes on the blink and doesn't work but I hope this one continues to be looking like a girl. Lucky you!

I sooooo want this one to be a girl. I noticed the comb yesterday, too. This is such a sweet chick. The only one that really shows roo behavior right now is Trooper. He also has the most comb. The blue could still go either way. I am taking my regular camera down there later and will send you some pictures. Maybe CopperTop will have a name change!!

WELL I may not have any MFd'Uccle eggs hatch....since I now have two on eggs and one stole all the eggs from the other hen and sat on them on the wire coop floor. Still this has happened two days straight, I spilt the eggs and put them in two different baskets and I HOPE the hens are happy I have one hen in each basket...I Pray this works out I just hope the eggs survived the fight of stealing....

I suppose I should read more before I answer! LOL
I have girls fight over eggs all the time and they survive to hatch but often when a chick hatches with 2 mamas they fight over it and kill it. Even my Silkies will do this so I discourage 2 hens hatching together. They can sit together but once the hatching date is close I separate them.

So far I've never taken it all out of the nest box. I scoop out a handful when we have a broken egg & we add more every other month.

We used to shred everything in the shredder, like credit cards & plastic window envelopes. Now we just shred regular paper.

Our shredder makes long stretched diamond shapes. They are maybe 3" long x 1/4" wide. I would think that long spaghetti like shreds might stay in the nest box better? These do make their way around/fall out/etc.

We have 6 laying hens & 1 hen who sleeps IN the nest box ;-)

Works great!

Thanks for the clever idea! I can't wait to get back to work now...we have bags and bags of this!!!

Thanks for the info...What a clever idea! I can get tons from work! Can't wait to give it a try! Now I am wondering how little biddies would do in it...hmmm Wonder if they would just get lost and tangled in that! HAHAHA May have to experiment....I guess it would depend on how close the heat light would be though...

bitties do well in it. till they fill up their waterer with it and it wicks a great big wet spot.... put your waterer up on something and I only use it when I feel the extra heat holding material will be useful. but in this 100 degree heat. I'm not putting any additional bedding to cook or swelter my chicks.
