Hey all I posted on here way back when first joined BYC, havn't really been on this thread since. Lots has happened. Anyway I got sort of an Issue. I have 4 chickens right now, they are about 10 weeks old right now, 2 males and 2 females(i believe).

One of the males is a smooth, the other 3 (1 cockeral and 2 pullets) are all frizzle.

They are Black bantam cochins. Looking for someone within driving distance, 30-40 min at most, that is willing to take in some pretty little birds.

here are some photos of 2 of them. shoot me a pm if your interested.

sorry if you can't really see them, they are so hard to photograph, being all black.

I lost my precious baby Blue Orp Anastasia this afternoon. She was fine last night. This morning, around 10, I found her lying in the run, real lethargic. It was already hot, and since it didn't get that cool last night (and she is a really heavy feathered almost 8 week old), I decided to bring her in. Lou Ann is out of town, so I was able to put her in the crate in her room and close the other animals out. I gave her some vitamins and electrolytes, and she seemed a little better. Left her standing with her head tucked under her wing.
When I went back a couple of hours later, I found her on her side, barely moving, I picked her up and her head was rolling really strange. She couldn't stand anymore. I knew then she wasn't going to make it. I held her for awhile and after 30 minutes or so she let out a small squawk, flailed her wings and actually roled out of my lap and had a seizure and then took her last breath.
I am thinking some kind of heat stroke. The babies still sleep in the large dog crate together, but Anastasia did sleep on the roost one night. I just wonder if she overheated last night. Or if some kind of bug bit her? He poop was completely normal. She pooped in the crate inside the house, making it easy for me to know.
I have cleaned their sleeping crate and bleached it out. The others seem okay tonight. I plan to check them early in the morning.
I still want a Blue Orp pullet, but the next one will have to be at least 8 weeks old. I think I am done with little chicks for awhile. This year has been a tough one after last year being so easy.

I was wondering what she looked like, very cool. Can't wait to see the babies! Until I read your post, I never really thought about how chickens reproduced..lol. Had to go read up on the process. Wonder if my Hamburg roo mght be able to fertilize my assorted heavy breed hens...

When I was researching my wish list for hatchery birds, I asked my mother if a Silkie rooster would be able to mate any large fowl hen. Mom started snickering. "What?" I demanded.

"Or die trying," Mom giggled. "You haven't spent time with a lot of roosters..."

Needless to say, my two Silkies were boys, not the hoped for girls. I watched in amazement when big brother "Bueller" danced and convinced a Dark Cornish hen to squat. Once she was on the ground, Bueller could reach what he needed. Little brother "Beckett" somehow conned my daughter into holding down hens for him. He would see Josie pick up a hen and Beckett would come a-running! Once Josie made the hen squat, Beckett took a little time to figure out which end he was supposed to be mating. I was howling! Over the next few weeks Josie learned about "hitting the target" and she would encourage Beckett to keep at it until the "wet" was in the correct spot. I was afraid she was going to encourage the poor rooster until he had a heart attack!

Small roosters are really just big rooster attitude in a cute littler package.

A Hamburg is larger than a Silkie. Wild guess: your boy will be up to the job.

I am so sorry. I can hear the sorrow in your post and am just so sad for you. I hope you get a blue orp--a nice healthy hen! Maybe even closer to laying age. I hate when they die and you don't know what happened(which I guess is most of the time with chickens). I think my chickens are all doing fine with the heat but it just goes to show that you just never know and can't be too careful!

So sorry to hear that you lost a favorite. This heat has been horrible!

I am so very sorry to read about your Anastasia. She was a gorgeous girl. So sad. :( I wish you comfort and healing.

Thank you. I was so thrilled to have ended up with a Blue Orp pullet and a Blue Copper Maran pullet. I will have a Blue Orp again. I am about to go check on the others. Praying they are all just fine today. Do not want to repeat yesterday again for a long time, if ever.

I have lost about 40 chickens in the last week and a half due to wild cats. I caught the third one in a live trap last night.. Once I got out all the little ones that were in there. they started killing my layers. And my back has been out for several days. Times like these are made to test a man's faith. But I will not loose mine. it is stronger then the devils kittens. But you can believe I'm going to send them all back to his house. ****** and Dead.
