Happy Thursday everybody! New day, lots to learn.
What do you all do with your roosters when they are not being baby makers? Can you put them together in a bachelor pad? Do they need their own coops? I read that you need to give them days off...so where do you put them?
Also, this may be weird...but if I didn't want to keep a rooster...is there such a thing as stud roosters lol? Like you borrow/rent them or bring your hen to them?
One more question for the day, Can anyone recommend a good Avian doctor(s) in the upstate? I read that this is probably the most important first step.

I am also in Anderson, Griffs is a good place. I have red stars, and a group of babies silkies, black astralorps, and easter eggers.

I have not had to use them for my chickens yet, but my vet, Electric City, said they can treat them, one of the doctors their see lots of birds. Tell them Mr. FishStick Mauldin's mom sent you....guarantee you will get a laugh...

I have 3 tween, and 3 baby easter eggers...so I am looking forward to pretty eggs, just got a handful of brown ones now (but they are pretty too) Yes we get feed at griffs, and occasionally pick up something at tractor supply. It really is slim pickins' around here when it comes to cool chicken stuff. Electric City is near you? Your on our side of town then.

I really cannot believe how long I have been away from the board. Life has been crazy busy and I just haven't had the time to sit down and read and comment. The babies we hatched out in May are now 17 weeks old and it is definitely time to add them to the rest of the crew. It may prove to be a challenge. They seem to do fine while free ranging, but now we will occasionally, while supervising, leave them together with the gate between the two areas open. We have a couple of girls who can be quite mean. Mostly, it is the two that are currently on the bottom of the pecking order. I guess they are enjoying having someone below them. I did see one of the young ones peck at someone last night, so at least one of them can be a little fiesty.

Willow, one of the Black Copper Marans, is a love. She is the most laid back and sweetest of all. I can pick her up and barely get a squawk from her. She still thinks shoulders are great and will stare at me and then look at my shoulder until I say, "Okay". Then she flies up.



In the midst of all the craziness last night, the young ones decided to find a safe place to escape the "old ladies". Amy breeds some smart birds!



Hopefully, I will get on here a little more often, especially as we try to transition these little ones (that I am oh, so protective of) in with the big girls and into their coop.

Another question...btw feel free to direct me to another forum if I'm tying up the thread...Can you have one Silkie with a few standard hens? Or will they get trampled? I was pondering today about the existence of an incubator and brooder in one...and then it hit me, a chicken! feel free to laugh

Anything raised together will stay together. I removed my lone turkey from the game chickens yesterday ( they were all hatched together ) and got it another little turkey to hang out with. The first thing she did was get out and went back to the game chicks.
Also a reminder that my incubator will be running throughout the Fall and spring. So pure RIR chicks, Juvies and young adults will be available.
With the Holidays coming up I am about to make another post that has nothing to do with chickens but more for information for charitable hearts.
Before you give to the needy this winter be sure your donations are doing what you are expecting them to do. Actually helping where they are needed.
