Just a great big bunch of friendly wonderful folks here!

When feather sexing. makes no difference if it is a sex-linked chick or not.
coloration has nothing to do with it. however if your unsure if the white spots or the yellow spots on sexlinks is which. use feather sexing to be sure
I flip the chick upside down and spread it's wing open.
IF the top ( inverted will be the bottom ) row of feathers is longer then the bottom row your holding yourself a little day old ( works up till 3 days old ) pullet.
IF the top AND bottom rows are the same length your holding a brand new baby cockerel

ONCE they hit Juvie stage you can look at the saddle feathers.
wide well rounded pullet
tapers down.. cockerel

Thanks Leirob007...I will be flippin' chicks and checking this out in the morning...LOL

I'm having a poohwee chicken week. I have lost 2 tiny silkie chicks

I have an 2month EE chick that has a bad cold, breathing through her mouth, sounds squeaky, and is sneezy. She/he is in the house with a 75degree heater on her, electrolyte vitamin water..any other ideas? I love her and do not want to lose her.
Now this from one of the big hens....

Good news is its getting better, day before yesterday, the shell was so soft there was yolk all in the nest..I tossed some oyster shell in for them to scratch around with..could this be one of the first from one of my pullets..or could it even be that my oldest hen is losing her mojo? I'm hoping its one of the young ones first egg..
Any advice? Thanks
Holli

For your sick chickie I recommend Gallimycin. It can be mixed in the water. Some people use Tylan. It really depends on what is causing the problem as to what to use as they can treat different problems. Having worked in a vet clinic for many years I can tell you it is better for me to do a hands on evaluation than to hear what symptoms the animal is having before knowing what to treat it for or with. However, there are very few vets that will see poultry. We have a few in Spartanburg but they are expensive.

With the egg, probably a new layer. Although if you have an older gal coming back from a hard molt it could be just that. I still lean towards a new girl though. It takes a while for eggs to do well with new layers sometimes.

Thank You so much! You are always a wealth of information! Where can I get Gallimycin? Can I order it, or call to see if the vet has it?

I order mine online. I have not seen it anywhere local to buy it but that doesn't mean it isn't out there. I believe I bought my last 4 packs at Cutler's Supply. It is used before shows and sales or shipping, though I am sure it has many other uses.
