I am such an accident waiting to happen, I could never make soap!! I am a great cook, but everytime I'm in the kitchen I manage to burn myself. I hurry to much and I'm the opposite of careful. I've got the scars to prove it
mdbucks-my comments were made with tongue in cheek, thus the emoticons-I wasn't sure if you were a teenager about to get into trouble or an adult joking around....I see now it was a combination...
Please don't take me seriously as I have seen enough argueing on here. I usually will just delete all my comments if I see the thread going downhill. didn't know you served on a nuclear sub, I am impressed and thankful to you.
Now why on earth do you want to play with lye? Too much time on your hands???
I grew up in a crazy Girl Scouts / Boy Scouts family.
We made lye soap in GS. Poured it into a pan and left it on the counter to cool while we sang & played games. A girl who got there late thought it was a cake, and scooped up some 'frosting' and stuck it in her mouth. Got a bad burn on her tongue and then got rushed to the ER when she FINALLY admitted what she'd done (actually, Mom guessed, based on the burn location and what she knew about lye). It was pretty scary for a while, and Laurie swore she'd never EVER sneak a dip of frosting off a cake EVER again!!
We also used some lye and a great big cast iron pot to make hominy. Even Mom was over that one, as it took ALL DAY and was a nasty smelling, vaporous process.
I've done the melt and pour soap kits. Boring after an upbringing like mine. Dipped beeswax candles and poured beeswax candles. Want to do bee-keeping but DH thinks chickens, candles, garden, potpouri and making jewelry are enough hobbies for now.
Would like to try your soap, but have to get my budget back under control
Do the bee thing if you get a chance, most communitys have a group /association, that shares the cetrifuge/hot knifes etc... and most will even hook you up with someone to learn from if you want. The intial investment for suit and hive is what gets you, and the wait for honey is longer than the wait for eggs, usually the first year is just buillding up hive to store enough to survive the winter, that may be different in warmer areas though
Ozark hen- I am just an overgrown Kid and I probably wouldn't go out of my way to get in trouble, but if it happens to find me who knows?
mdbucks...My dd has actually caught a swarm...put it in a cardboard box with her neighbor friend. My husband and I just about fell over dead...we made her let it go before we knew what we had. I thought they were yellow jackets...but found that they don't swarm. She's also reached in the ground pulling out yellow jacket nests without getting stung. She's got an impressive bug and butterfly collection. She checked out all these books about bees and has been studying diligently!
Thanks for the tip on the elastic...we bought her the whole beekeeper suit for her birthday from Rossman's! It'll be nice to use during black fly season too! Hopefully it will be here in time.
We wanted to wait till next spring to start the new colony...its getting cold here already! Felt bad about all those poor drones being kicked out and killed for the winter! That's why I signed her up for the class...my husband is so excited about it. We get all the supplies we need, plus the bees with the cost of the class. Only had to sign up my dd and my husband is going to come along to help her...instructor said she's had many children join the beekeeping club! My dh is going to build his own at home and place it with the one from class. We are worried we won't have enough room on our property...we've a little over 2 acres...couple fruit trees! Was thinking about calling a friend who has an orchard and asking if we could put them there?
She's halfway thru Beekeeping for Dummies! Its cute...she doesn't understand why its for Dummies...she keeps saying I'm NO dummie!
You have plenty of room, and if the orchard is nearby they will go there anyway, bees cant be trained to stay home(but they are being trained to sniff for bombs) we had fruit trees, and Tulip poplar trees. Any neighbor with flowers or thier own trees should be thankful you have a hive. I forget but I want to say they will travel something lik 5 mile radius, so they will find what they need. One of my first swarms was a guy from work called knowing I did bees, they had taken over his bird feeder, if youget them when they first swarm they are gentle, its later that they get nasty if a new home hasn't been found. Will wait and see what next sproing brings, may have one setup by them.

WOW I received my order today and I'm very happy I love the smell so much, I can't wait to try it. If I want it to last, so should I let it sit out in the air for a little while? I know you already "cure" it for a bit. What do you think?
1 of each bar is going to my sister for her b-day, I think you might have another customer after that.

The Lavender & Goats milk has only been cured a little over 3 weeks. It's fine to use and actually I'm surprised at how hard it is already. Send me an email to [email protected] if you want to add something to my testimonials page once you try them.
I was getting ready to place an order, but I am going to wait for the soap with grits!
That will make great gifts for my daughter in laws parents from NJ, and me of course......
I want to try the Cin Bun too........
