There is an enzyme in the beans that scars their intestine. You have to destroy it with heat, either through roasting or boiling. Commercial feed uses a chemical to remove it, organic feed has to be roasted to remove it which contributes to it's higher cost.

Acutally HeadHen the compound in rasw soybeans is a Trypsin Inhibitor that prevents the Trypsin excreted in the gut of monogastrics to cleave various bonds in the proteins found in Soybeans. Without the use of Trypsin and Chymotrypsin the proteins can not be digested. Fortunately the Trypsin Inhibitor can easily be denatured with heat. All forms of Soybean Meals are heated in some manner to destroy the Trypsin Inhibitor.

The chemical you refer to in commercial Soybean Meal has absolutely no effect on the Trypsin Inhibitor, rather the Hexane is used as a solvent to extract the Oil from the Soybean Meal. The use of solvents allows for the removal of virtually all of the oil.

I think ill hold off until winter for the soybeans. They are $8.50 per 50#. There layer mash has soybeans in it, so maybe the soybeans have already been roasted. I found a soybean in the bag that has a burn mark on it.

Most soybean that is now grown are engineered to enable the crops to withstand doses of herbicides that would otherwise kill them. Roundup Ready soybeans contain a gene that prevents damage from Roundup. It is susposed to be safe for human and animal consumption. 12 million acres are planted. Also other crops such as corn and cotton.
