Carol, so glad she is doing better, how are te newest 4 settling in?


Just ended one hatch here. 8 out of 10 viable eggs hatched from these EE/Arucana cross. Their colors are so pretty, will get a pic once ths last one fluffs out. Setting my next round of chicken eggs, more EE/Arucana mix and some Wheaton Marans. Call Ducks are cooking right along hoping we get a good out of them, but they are so hard to hatch.

Our poor sick goat finally laid down yesterday and ouldnt get back up. He had perked ack up after sub que fluids and was eatting and drinking his water. We had given him a fortified B injection and probios but in the end he just could bounce back. Hubby has to burry him on our wooded property today. The other three are showing no symptoms at all, so hoping it wasnt viral. Vit B, probios and deworming all around this week though just to be safe. Apollo was a very sweet quiet goat that will be missed around here.

Colorful flock with addition of new girls. They are beginning to socialize with other girls and are not wandering so much and have been laying since the first day. Our new RIR girls may still be very young as we have only had 1 egg from them. They are sweet and beginning to let us pick them up. 1 is still trying to get into coop thru wire bottom..............she has been named Dimlet as a result. Silly chicken .

yes they are very young yet, one of the twohad just molted, it had maybe been 3-4 days when you were here that she had come out of it. If she doesnt lay soon let me know, dont want to leave you eggless from her. So funny the one cant figure out the wire bottom on the coop. Hope she catches on soon.

Thanks for the welcome FL. Sorry to hear about apollo. Hope all the others are fine. I also have two sheep, just got done sheering and hoof trimming. That was a job.

geepy, please tell us about your flock and other pets. Got me curious when you mention sheep and shearing. Do you spin?

Shellie, these 2 Sicilian buttercups have spurs. Have never seen that on hens before, how do I trim them? I am concerned that when my Erin visits she will want to pick them up and might get spurred.

My roos get spurs pulled tomorrow. Two ways to do it. Heat a potato cut in half push onto spur and let it heat and loosen then use a twiting action near the bse of the spur to pull off the outter long layer. Or you can use a pair of spliers (I am not trong enough to do it with just fingers) grab the spur near the base and twist gently till it comes off. It will leave a shorter, softer spur behind.


Geepy, thank you. The others are doing fine, tomorrow is hoof day here. Spent today building a 12x12 flight pen for the ducks with a large pond in one corner.

My sheep are mixed with self shearing and their wool is not good for spinning. I compost the hair for the garden and leave some for the wild birds for nest.
I do send my excess roos to freezer camp and also process my own hogs. I really enjoy raising my own groceries.

Forgot to mention I also have three horses. (use the manure for the garden also)
