Special Treats!!

I didn't want to bore everybody with the science. String halt is caused by a second- hand magnesium deficiency. The muscle enzymes are no longer working. String halt develops if a horse is turned out on cape weed and other flat weeds such as dandelion ( both of which cause magnesium deficiency) and if it fed on a feed grown with superphosphate ( which also inhibits magnesium). And if you want to feed your dog chocolate that's up to you. I can only speak of my own experience, and I have seen a horse with string halt come round with crushed magnesium orotate tablets. The equine vet suspected it was the hay we had brought in as it was full of dandelion . My point was that just because something is fit for humans, doesn't mean it's ok for chickens .

It take quite a bit of chocolate to kill a dog.....we had a cocker spaniel that ate a double batch  of chocolate cookies and did not die...LOL.. and aspirin is not recommended for cats as they don't get rid of pain killing drugs well, but one aspirin will not kill....

And many experts recommend dandelion leaves as a treat...

Potatoes are not on the whole toxic. Just the green parts that have turned green in the sun. I let mine eat potato peels all the time and haven't died or gotten sick yet. Do you eat potatoes? The basic rule to go by in feeding chickens is if you can eat it they can eat it. And there is this, the amount of solinage in a few potato peels is no near a fatal dose even to a chicken.

It is easier to stay away from them all together than to pick out what parts can be given and what can't. To be honest they are just carbs that the chicken doesn't need anyhow. There are many more nutritious treats that are available.

If you are going to use the mindset of, if humans eat it so can your chickens, I hope you don’t give your chickens alcohol. To be honest you can feed whatever you would like to your chickens just like I can do the same. We as owners of animals have to take the responsibility of the outcome. I keep my chickens as pets and to produce the highest quality eggs I can afford to get. So I try to stay with healthy treats.

There is no telling the level of experience each person has and I feel it is my responsibility to pass on my knowledge. The original poster may not know, I know if I was giving something to my pet that was unhealthy I would appreciate the heads up. That is why I joined this site, to learn and share knowledge with like minded people.

You can take that information and do with it as you please.

Here is a link to the list I have printed and keep on the side of my fridge to reference.

I use the store bought mushrooms. I am not sure about the grass ones since it could have chemicals.

Does anyone know what foods are dangerous to feed chickens?

Here’s why:
Raw green potato peels

Toxic substance called Solanine.
Anything real salty
Can cause salt poisoning in small bodies such as chickens.
Citrus

.
Dried or undercooked Beans
Raw, or dry beans, contain a poison called hemaglutin which is toxic to birds.
Avocado Skin and Pit

Skin and pit have low levels of toxicity.
Raw eggs
You don’t want to introduce your chickens to the tastiness of eggs which may be waiting to be collected in the nestboxes.
Candy, Chocolate, Sugar
Their teeth will rot… No, it’s just bad for their systems, and chocolate can be poisonous to most pets.
A quote from Nifty-Chicken,
the Administrator of BYC:

"I gave up on my birds knowing what was best for them when I caught them all eating a block of Styrofoam pellets

I got this off of the Chicken Treat Chart
