Special Treats!!

I have given my chicks fresh bananas & papayas that grow on my farm. I start feeding them the fruit with chick grit sprinkled liberally on it once they are a week old, sometimes just to teach them to eat, since new ones often don't like the starter feed much. I even mix some of the store bought starter with the fruit, watermelon when I have it, but now that they're month old they get fresh grass, kale, avocado, along with their daily meal that starts with banana slices and papaya slices (seeds included).

My chickens love plain cold yogurt, ripe bananas, tomatoes and the peels, berries, eggs, and many other treats listed in BYC as safe for chickens. Sometimes I make up a suet cages and hang it for them to peck. They love it. Here are some fotos.

That is wonderful, my children and I love ours too, all pets! Just wondering is your rir a hen? Mine looks kind of the same, I was thinking she may be a he:(

I had one RIR that was the same way...in the absence of a rooster she took over and was bossing everyone around and pulling head and neck feathers.  I even saw her try to crawl on another hen's back.  She is re-homed now along with another of her RIR buddies.  They are doing very well in their new home.

Lol. Sometimes mine comes at us with her head down like an attacking goose. She also flapped her wings and tried to spur me the other day. Lol. She always stands still to be picked up and is a sweet gentle chicken while being petted. She is only aggressive when we walk around the yard ignoring her. L
