My crazy mother bought me a dozen "Large Brown Eggs-Cage Free" that where the most beautiful eggs Ive ever seen. They were a deep brown color and speckled. I have no idea what kind of bird lays these eggs. Can anyone help me? Or maybe point me in the direction of where I can see a chart or something of the different color eggs each breed 'normally' lays?

I say crazy, because she knows I have my own, home grown eggs.

I've had several breeds with "speckling" on the egg. It is the hen, not the breed that determines this and how she applies her "paint" as the egg is moving through the reproductive tract.

I get speckled eggs like that from my Barnevelders, sometimes my Welsummers and on occasion from a Jersey Giant. There may be other breeds that do this but so far that is all I have noticed it on here.
I find it hard to get good photos of eggs on the Internet but maybe if you looked up brown speckled eggs in Google you could get some ideas. I always click on Images and look at all the photos that come up.
Good luck and have fun!

I was thinking that, but was hoping not.

I just got in from getting groceries and while I was at the store I peeked in the cartons on those eggs. I would say out of all the eggs I looked at, 90% were that same color.

The dark colored egg and then even darker colored spots. How is it that that many chickens can have something wrong with the RT? I wish it would say what farm the eggs came from. That was maybe I could get ahold of them and ask what kinda chickens they have.

It doesn't necessarily mean there's anything wrong with the digestive tract. Some hens just lay those speckly eggs. I have one who speckles most of her eggs with white paint, and one who is currently laying medium brown eggs with almost lavender speckles. We are also getting the occasional brown egg with dark speckles. I even had a girl laying a white egg with the funny lavender speckles. I haven't seen any of those for a while.

I've read that it is often due to diet, but don't quote me on that...
