Hi all, I’ve been getting some eggs I think have faded speckles but I was wondering if it’s anything else? It’s not every egg but I see it every now and again. The ones laying are silkie crosses but I’m not sure what with. I just want to make sure they’re speckled and not poor shell quality :idunno

Those look porous, you can tell better when candled. Speckles on silkie eggs will be a tanish brown upon white, or tinted shell background.

Okay that’s pretty neat to look at. I just used my phones flashlight to look through them and those two are very porous. Is there anything to worry about with those ones? Are they not as well protected from bacteria?

I've hatched porous eggs before, but those types of eggs don't always hatch. I think it might have to do with bacteria, but not 100% sure.

I didn't know.
They're safe too eat, I've eaten many porous eggs.
Ah sweet, thank you so much! I haven’t seen eggs that noticeably porous from the outside before, I assure it’s from my girls just starting up. I’ve only had to care for old production leghorns before and their eggs were always great quality

Your ladies will work things out eventually.

The porosity may be a start up glitch or not.
Only time will tell.
IME a bird that lays porous egg will always lay porous eggs.
It’s not every egg I had been noticing. There’s been some quite noticeably porous shells but I was seeing them more when the first three were just starting out. I had gone back to look at all the eggs more yesterday and most of the “speckled” eggs were from the first few weeks, those two I posted about were from this past week. I’ve had more start up so I think these ones are from them.

Now I want to go through the eggs again when I get home and see what’s really porous and what isn’t and confirm these things :gig
