they are not goopy or droopy, but look as if it just woke up, as compared to the others that are completely round..... she kinda looks "stoned" no other ailments. she is eating and drinking. any thoughts?
So upon closer examination today, no goop in the nose, no goop in the eyes, eyes are not droopy just tired looking and constantly wants to sleep. When I picked her up she opened her eyes all the way up. She is eating and drinking, not missing feathers. 1 thing I did notice is she is smaller that all the rest, but all my speckled sussex are smaller than my other birds.
Have you tried giving her some vitamins? You should be able to find them at the feed store, if there's one nearby. My best guess is that maybe she's just feeling a little under the weather.
I'm having the same problem. I recently bought 4, 10 month old Salmon Faverolles, beautiful birds. One in particular, she is just slightly smaller (has beautiful spotted markings all over!), has a drowsy look, usually keeps her head pulled in.....she eats and drinks, moves around some, droppings look normal, sinuses look good, she's been wormed and they were all on vitamins (still is)....Something just isn't right. At first I thought she was about to start molting, her feathers look a little dull/scruffy and her comb is pink - not red like the others. - Another oddity, she is reluctant to jump up on the roost at night - pacing around looking up at it - if I'm available she runs to me to pick her up and put her on it!
I can't figure it out. I hope she's ok - I'd really like to hatch some chicks and see if the color pattern carries. She's a very sweet girl.
Hmm, ok. Do you give her any medicated feed, by chance? I'm starting to wonder if it's some kind of cocci problem.
Another possibility is sour crop, but I don't know very much about that or the symptoms. I went and dug up some info in a thread on this stuff to see if it provides better help. Check posts # 7, 8, and 9:
Nothing seems to fit my Salmon Fav.....she's still very pale and fluffed up. Those seem to be the only symptoms. I've given her a good exam and found nothing, so I wormed her - I've only had her for about 3 weeks, the other 3 that came with her appear to be healthy. I contacted the previous owner and the lady said she'd noticed the unusual behavior, she wormed her and gave vitamins.
She always comes to greet me and see if I have treats, eats and drinks good, normal droppings, no mites/lice, no tail pumping or straining - doesn't feel eggbound.
Just kinda sits/stands in or around the coop, fluffed up and pale - and no eggs. She may be slightly better than when I first posted, hard to tell....Today will be 5 days since I wormed her. After 3 weeks, it can't be deadly! And everybody else is good?! My best guesses are molting, stress, or nutrition - one of those. My birds eat better than I do and I feed her by hand or watch to make sure she's getting enough, so she should be recovering if it's any of them.... She eats good.....
Thanks again for the links and help
Update: she seems to being doing better, no longer fluffing up and getting out and about more often. Color is coming back too....
update.... she has died and now i have more infected.... only the speckled sussex are affected and not all of them. i had 6 now i have 5 and 4 of the 5 are in isolation and 1 of the 4 in isolation looks fine but I'm not taking any chances. i am leaning towards mareks disease. 1 in isolation has lost the use of her legs, and i found some green poop. i also found a link on here about curing markes with holistic meds. might give that a try.
