I don't think of it as "selling eggs" but rather "trading eggs for chicken feed". The money I get for the eggs just puts a dent in the feed bill. In a good season it can cover half, but when they're all molting (like now) it covers a lot less. I know, I know, I've got too many older ladies who probably aren't contributing to the cause and ought to be Mrs Tweedy'd, but they're some of our original flock and we're way too sentimental about them.
My plan is to let nature take its course with the older ones and let the flock get much smaller, to a more manageable size. Any new hens I add from now on will be considered candidates for the soup pot when they reach retirement age, and may not all get named, unless they distinguish themselves in some outstanding way. I'd rather have a small flock that can provide fresh eggs for just my family's needs, and maybe a bit extra for giving away, than have so many birds to feed that I must find others to buy them in order to meet the feed bill.
I do sometimes take the eggs I cannot sell to church, and let members take them in exchange for donations to our building fund. It's a way that my chickens & ducks can help build the church. Maybe they can earn enough to add a "wing" to the building!
