Spirit - the amazing grey dewlap toulouse gander!

Spirit is not doing very well. He won't rest and keeps over-doing it, but refuses to use his frostbitten foot because it is clearly very painful to him. So, we had to kennel him starting last night to force him to rest, which seems to help. Scott is coming over later this afternoon to see him.

At least we finally got a break in the weather yesterday and our highs are in the 30s and lows staying above 0F. That is a relief!!

I hope Scott will have some ideas on what to do for Spirit. wonder why he won't rest? is this typical of geese?

Did he behave like this with the discomfort when he was little? Sounds like he´s stressed if he´s can´t sit still. Is there a calmant for geese?
What about using a baby door swing or walker or something that can be adapted to go under him to support his weight but keep him upright so he doesn´t feel vulnerable? Glad the weather´s giving you a break.

No news?

It is not typical for geese, but it has always been Spirit's nature to want to stand. It is also common for Spirit to not put pressure on his bum foot when in pain, instead exhausting himself trying to get up using only one leg. The dog kennel has been doing him good and he can actually stand up pretty well inside of it. I take him out every 3-4 hours for food/water/exercise, too.

No word yet from Scott. I imagine he got hung up with family stuff, but will hear from him soon.

Sounds like the kennel was a good idea, then, keeps him restrained and gives him support too. What a determined bird! You, too! Well done.

Spirit is very determined! Scott called and said he'd be here in an hour or two. I'll be sure to report how things go after he leaves.
