I have seen my Scovie girls catch and eat snakes and frogs, and worms and crickets and grass hoppers and slugs etc. haven't seen them catch and eat a mouse yet. Not sure I'd want to. One of my girls caught a ' long copper head and ate it. I was in a panic, called everyone i could think of vets, zoo non could tell me if it would kill her, she just acted like it was just another small animal to eat.Marty, Lydia will have muscovy eggs in the spring. What is the latest with the criminal action??![]()
Ruru, it is adorable! I have no idea if muscovies eat mice/snakes. Mine spend most of their time on the stream, presumably eating minnows, bugs, worms, snails, leeches and other lovely stuff. They also love their grain and I've seen them eating my cats' food, too. We don't have many snakes in our area, but I see my cats and birds of prey with mice and voles in their mouths all of the time.
Well I have 13 Scovies and never see any mice running around when they are outside. Now at night when everyone is locked up i have seen a few show up on the game camera. I will say one time I found a mouse nest in our building where our weed eaters are stored and when I picked it up with the shovel baby mice fell out and the ducks ate them in a split second. Thanks everyone now my question has been answered about moscovys. They eat a lot of different things. But still wonder about mice?
We have alot of copper heads in this part of the mountains but I have only seen a handful, I think they also ate all our other kinds of snakes. I use to see ring necks and garter snakes, but not anymore, the only snakes brave enough to come around now are the 4-6' blk rat snakes, I usually find them in the coops looking for eggs. Makes me feel like Crocodile hunter would be proud of me when I carry them down the driveway and let them go.Aha! That's good to know!! When hubby and I lived in Florida for a few years (I'm from there, but it was hubby's first experience), our boxer got bit on the nose by a garden snake. My hubby panicked, half-killed the snake and took both snake and boxer to local vet convinced the boxer was in serious trouble. The clinic people tried hard to not laugh at him as they explained that garden snakes are harmless.
