We are getting close..... pain block is working perfect and Spirit is doing great. Scott has made a huge hole in foot and is almost done scraping the bone/joint. I have pics if anyone wants to see, but they are very graphic.

The procedure is done and Scott is very optimistic that it will be a complete success. It will be a long road to recovery and a lot of follow-up care, but Spirit is already feeling some relief!

Praying for a full recovery! I for one would like to see the pictures ( later ) ... I've done the chicken surgery but might need pictures for the vet if Napoleon ever gets real bad.

No worries. When I get them loaded on my computer, I will send them via pm. Spirit had necrotic bone and the infection was in his joint, requiring Scott to use a special tool and scrape the bone out. You will see the hole is extremely large and deep.

Sorry to offend anyone, but I figured it would be better to post the pictures publicly, in case anyone finds some benefit to them.










I would personally not try this on my own and definitely would not want any of my geese to have it done without lydacaine injections to block pain, but the ring (which is a clothes hanger wrapped in gauze) and wrap job to protect area is pretty neat even for minor do-it-yourself procedures. FYI, the gauze that is packed into hole is cut to size, then soaked in chlorhexidine solution, which is far superior than betadine for healing. I am to remove pack once daily, flush with chlorhexidine solution, then repack. He is also getting penicillin injections 2x daily for the next 5 days.

Actually J it's not as bad as I imagined. I was thinking we were going to see bone etc. Thanks for sharing. I agree this needs to be done by a pro. can chlorhexidine be bought over the counter? are you doing the injections? how is he doing?

Actually, in the first pic... that is the joint and bone cored out, just hard to tell with the blood. Chlorhexidine can be bought in small bottles over the counter for humans in pre-diluted solution. The brand name is Hibiclens. Chlorhexidine in the animal world is known as Nolvasan and can be purchased at the feed store in concentrated solution. Dilute 1 tbsp. of solution to 1 cup water.

Iain gets to inject Spirit (in the breast) while I hold him. Same with the wound flushing and repacking job.

Spirit is doing really well. He is still being kept in the dog kennel to force rest, but when I take him out, he is eating great and already starting to test using foot.
