Spirit - the amazing grey dewlap toulouse gander!

I found out today that the feed store 12 blocks away carries alfalfa, timathey, and prarie grass hay! Now I'm good for goats and gooses! Does that mean when its super cold, I can keep the Africans inside (since they are the most at risk in the cold, from what I understand) in the barn all day in bad weather?

Iain, do your africans have issues with the cold?

Iian I am so glad that Spirit is on the mend from him over doing it. Right now I have a goose that is limping alittle bit. I put down more straw down hoping it is just a foot that just got too cold. If not any better the I will put him in a stall inside the barn that I had made for thier breeding pen. My stalls are the size of horse stalls. Most of them are 10x11, how amy geese can I put in each one?

Good morning, goose loving friends. Glad to see you all dropping in on the thread to say hello.

Ruru, thank you for your warm wishes! He definitely overdid it the first day he returned to his group, but he is so smart that he made the necessary adjustments and has improved since then. I continue to see slow and steady progress, so I feel really optimistic that he will make a full recovery.

Marty, I have noticed that the super cold (10F or below) bothers my geese's legs the most. They can only walk a few feet before laying down on legs to warm them up. They especially do not like deep snow as I am sure it really freezes their little legs. However, they seem to prefer staying outside as they hang out on the stream in really bad weather rather than going into one of their shelters.

Triplell, My dewlaps love to gimp themselves getting out of the kiddy pool. They will get a leg hung up and it pulls on the hip muscles. Most of the time I will not do anything and it will resolve itself in a day or two. As for size of pen, I think it depends a lot on how well they get along. I would try putting 4-6 into the stall and see how that works.

I'm getting ready to take Spirit outside and will be sure to get some new pics of him! In the meantime, someone (I think on this thread) asked how well my africans get along with my ducks. Here are a couple pics I took when feeding this morning.

Great pics J, Do you know how old the Africans are?

And do you know why the Africans have dark spots on their beaks?
