Spitzhaubens

14 weeks..

The Silver’s crest is starting to tame and come forward. I suspect hers will end up looking somewhat similar to those on the Greenfire site.

I don’t have any good pics of the golds, and I don’t have pics of the 3rd. My guess is that all the gold may be cockerels. As for their crests, they are going through varying stages. Sometimes straight up, sometimes forward. We will see where they end up. You can catch a glimpse of 2 in this short clip.

Beldar and the girls are now 6 months old. Beldar is well behaved so far, respectful of hens and humans alike. Here they are this morning, enjoying the sunshine and above freezing temps:

Due to predators, my flock has been mostly cooped up. They usually run around a bit each morning while I clean & refill feeders. Then I call them back in & lock them up. Today while I was outside with them, poor Poof Poof (my son's Spitzhauben) was landed on by a hawk. I saw the scuffle & chased the hawk off while Poof Poof ran inside. i collected the rest from their hiding spots & then looked over Poof Poof. The only bloody spot is on her wing. I ran the wing under warm water & parted the feathers to generously spray Blu-kote. Thankfully I saw no wounds on the neck or body and the wing moves normally.

Is there any other care I should give right now? She's friendly but seriously dislikes being confined, so i returned her to the coop/run.

I can't believe how brazen the hawk is. It attacked in front of 2-3 roosters and 1 human. Now it just sits on a low branch about 15' from the coop. I keep throwing rocks at it, but it only moves to a slightly different spot. I'm inside now to grab some pots for banging.

Oh no! What kind of hawk is it?

The 2 common hawks we get are Coopers & Red tailed. This one was not giant like the reg red tailed hawks we see, but the chest did not look like the Coopers hawk. i think perhaps a juvenile red tailed.

The chest looked like this one with a large blank area on the chest.

This is the reg hawk we see. (A coopers I think) It's not afraid of humans at all. I'm seriously afraid my kids may try to "pet" it since it lets us get so close. Today's hawk was bigger.
