Spitzhaubens

Pics
Such a nice color. I bet they camouflage very well in any environment.
Thank you! They should really blend in when the leaves start to fall. My mille fleur d'uccles are almost invisible in the leaf litter in the fall until they move.

So what do you get if you mix an Apenzeller Spitzhauben with a Black Orpington?

I had no idea, but I noticed my Spitz eggs had "bull's eyes." When my Sebright went broody, I allowed her to sit on 2 Spitz eggs. They are due to hatch tomorrow, but I heard peeping in the nest today.

The chick in my hand came from one of the Spitz eggs.

I post more pics after the hatch.

So both Spitz eggs hatched. It was easy to know their mother by the egg, but now I'm beginning to wonder about which Orpington is the father.

Here are the 2 "Spitz-ingtons"
The brown is what has me wondering about the dad.

Our Blk/lav split orp is the top roo, but our young double barred chocolate cuckoo orp was raised with the Spitz. He may have had more mating opportunities. Could the brown have come from the chocolate cuckoo or would they have to be barred to be his offspring?

Anyway, they are very tiny & adorable. Although mutts, they're already my favorites. I really hope they get a crest.

So the current chick count is 10 - with a possible 2 more tomorrow. My broody is still sitting tight, so we'll see what happens.

I do think that a barred father... Uh :barnie I haven't had enough coffee yet so I currently know nothing.

:( sorry.

You can look it all up on this site:

http://kippenjungle.nl/kruising.html

The link goes to the complicated page (where you need to know the gene names etc.) but there is a button there that will take you to the "simple" page, where you can just click on "barred" or "black" etc.

I like working with that page, learning about genetics.

As to the crest.... I hatched out a bunch of chcks this spring... I thought the crest was clear pretty early on... Maybe even at hatch?????

Sorry... Close to zero brain function here.

Sadly I still can't figure out that page. I was told that my choc orp could not have been the father b/c his chicks would have to be barred.

I believe my Spitz grew their crests around 2.5 weeks old. They're not like the poliish & silkie chicks with the domed heads. I also remember that the chicks were not a solid color, but had multiple shades of gray, yellow, & white. Perhaps the bit of brown comes from the Spitz hen or a long ago recessive from my blk./lav spilt orpington.

Such a size diff!
Here's one of the lav orp chicks next to it's 1/2 Spitz sibling. The smaller Spitz chick is one day older.
