Spitzhaubens

He surely wishes the elder hens thought so too! I think it will happen. Eventually. The oldest, a 4 yr. old Sussex, just hates him.
I understand. My son's speckled sussex beats up our cockerels for sport. She's a tough old bird.

Unfortunately, our only Spitz girl has faults; too much black, feathers growing out of her face. Both girls had too much black, the other pullet was killed by a hawk. So Trixie and Beldar are all I have, one pair.

I think trixie looks pretty good. Yes, a bit of black, but maybe with beldars good spangling, you'd get some with less. My Jake's chest is very black. It seems to have gotten more black with age. His son Jack has less black. At least for now.

It's all about Jake's crest right now. (and his sweet mild manners....he is such the perfect gentleman 💞) It's the perfect forward facing over the eyes look you could want. Jack got a good bit of that gene, but has some side sprigs that go this way and that.

Later, Trixie laid an egg in a nest! Here it is next to a leghorn egg. I'm now hopeful for more Spitzhaubens in my future!
