Spitzhaubens

Ah yes that's the only one I had with that issue. I had more issues with that one hatch I did. No issues after even with breeding those that had the issues. None that have come from those have had issues. I'm still keeping any eye out on each hatch.

Two in one order seams weird but could just be a correlation and not something to worry about. All we can do from that point is breed a few generations our selves and see if it pops up. If not then it's a one off. If it shows up then it's a problem to cull for. I might send an email to them to look out for the issue in their own stock or chicks they hatch from their breeders.
Good points.

I didn't do any breeding with the ones I had, and it didn't occur to me to tell the hatchery because I didn't care enough to demand a refund, but I should keep those things in mind if I ever have a similar situation in the future.

Most of the Spitzhaubens I had came from Rural King, who special ordered them for me from Hoover’s Hatchery. (Which is where TSC gets their chicks from too.)

One thing I just noticed is that Hoover’s isn’t selling any chicks to the public this year! :eek:Their website says to go to your local farm store! I wonder if that means RK and TSC can special order chicks for customers, or if people are stuck with whatever their local store happens to get in. (Not that I want chicks from Hoover’s. Their Spitz were just ok.) The RKs and TSCs around me rarely ever get anything unusual or special.
Hoovers also bought out or took over Privett Hatchery.

Our feed store, Carolina Town & Country, used to get most of thier orders from Privett's. No one seems to know who is now hatching all the breeds that Privett was hatching... certainly not on Hoovers OR Privett's site (which changes to Hoovers as soon as you click off home page).

Are Spitz chicks always sold straight run? Or does anyone know of a place that could ship good quality, fully feathered birds to Vermont? 😅
I really want to add a couple, but I don’t want to end up with roosters.

Yes. I think only way to do that would be to find a breeder that is close by and work out a deal for pullets.

My pretty girl!
