'Splain something to me in re to baseball-type caps

Sure it did, but it's better if your stuff doesn't burn down. We COULD all go back to living in the dark ages...throw away the cell phones and start hauling water every morning. Outhouses anyone? I mean....

Well I guess you could say that I live in the dark ages then , because I have to haul 16 five gallon buckets a day out to my horses and chickens because we don't have frost free spickets out to the pasture . I'm sorry to hear about your in-laws fire....but life happens . I'm glad they weren't inside . My point is that technology...especially cell phones has had so much of a negative impact on society , that I wish they were never invented . People are talking/texting while they are driving , at the stores , and while they're eating dinner . Do you really believe that a cell phone is worth missing out on life ? No thank you for me . I have one for long distance , and for when I travel out of town . I get so irritated that Everyone asks for your phone number...I give them the land line...then they ask for your cell number . 9 times out of 10 everyone will call the cell and never call the land line . I live in a place where there is NO cell service , I tell everyone to call the land line but time and again they call the cell . WHY ?!

The problem is still people, not phones. Just because you have a phone call does NOT mean you have to answer it immediately. People seem to have a Pavlovian reaction when their phone goes off. That doesn't have to be the case for you.

To solve the mirror problem, simply don't look in one. I know I can get up in the morning, stand in front of it to wash my face and put my hair up, and 5 minutes later I can't remember if my face looked ok. I just don't look at myself. You can do the same with answering your phone, just don't. That text message will STILL be there when you get where you're going, I promise.

Midway through our meal a group of 6 came in, all three males--mid 30's to 40's--wearing baseball caps--not especially clean ones either--which they kept on during the whole meal. What's with that?

I concur.

I have no mirror problem....I like who I am and am able to look at myself to know that I do everything in my power to look in the mirror each morning and know that I am a good person . I don't like how I look right now , but I can still face the mirror . My point on the whole cell phone thing was.... the reason they request it be turned off is that most people have a knee jerk reaction to answer it . You stated that you didn't agree with it...hence my reply . Yes the problem is with people...that's my point . I have no problem with using cell phones...mine is dead 90% of the time and people yell at me for it . My other point is , technology and the lack of morals and respect has turned everyone into some sort of talking/texting addict who has to interupt a conversation/dinner/driving to answer or text on their phone . Whatever happened to face to face conversations ? You stated that you couldn't turn your phone off because then you wouldn't know who called you .....the phones do have answering machines....so if it was really that important , then they would leave a message and you would still know who called . You also stated that there was a fire at your in-laws....wouldn't it be better to call the fire department rather than other people who had cell phones ? Unless the people your SIL knows people who has a fire truck available to put the fire out ( including you since you stated she called you ) .....I don't see how a cell phone would save anything unless they lived 50 miles out of town . I live 10 miles out of town and a cell phone wouldn't do me a bit of good because we don't have service .

Yup, that was the policy with the land line as well. If it was important, they'd leave a message, if not, who cares? Meh.

About the fire thing, yeah we're a little peeved at the neighbor who called EVERYONE ELSE in town, but not the fire department. We're secretly hoping his house burns down next, but that's kinda mean. Perhaps we'll say that we hope Karma catches up with him for it. The polite way of saying the same thing, since we ARE on the manners thread

But apparently it's a common trend. My sister's fiance's grandpa died last year, probably because when he quit breathing the teenager that was with him called her parents instead of 911. Doesn't that Rescue 911 TV show come on anymore? I think they've missed a few kids who need to get the message.

In which case, I'll KEEP my phone, since I'm not counting on anyone else to call 911 for me. Some people must have a 911 phobia or something. Not me,

Well you just answered everyone's question. You don't get service so you have no use for it. I had the same feelings about cells before I had to start using one. Sometimes calls are important. My daughters blood glucose level is more important than someone being annoyed while I get up to answer the cell phone. If the sitter gives to much Humalog to her she could go into a coma. In the past without a cell phone, we would have had to take her with us or stay home. Since technology has made it possible to communicate immediately, we are able to go out on our own. There's nothing wrong with leaving your cell on vibrate if you are actually expecting an important call.

Texting and driving = bad. Texting while talking to someone else is rude. Kids all text and just because it annoys some of us doesn't make it wrong as long as they aren't driving or in class. Things are changing.

Just for the record. I think baseball caps look stupid too. They look real stupid turned backwards. They're ok when working outside or if you're bald to prevent skin cancer. No problems with mirrors either. How else are you supposed to see how hot you are. LOL

You will pry my cell phone from my cold, dead hands...

I don't text a lot, but I do send a few a day. It's quicker and easier than a phone call for things like, "Hey, I'm going to be late today. Meet me at X instead of Y." Plus, more often than not, when I'm able to send that message, the other person is not able to receive it. So, this way, he/she can check it later instead.

I also use my cell phone to VERY quickly delete all email I don't want to read. Instead of logging into several email accounts each day, I only log in if I actually want to send a message (of more than a few lines - I send the short ones on my cell). Well, I also have to log into my work email, since they won't let us put those on our Blackberry. They have them set up somehow to restrict that.

My cell phone also means that I always have a few dozen books with me. This means that I always have a useful way to occupy my time. I use an eReader, otherwise, but for times when I need something to do other than stare at a wall, I can always pull out my Blackberry and read a book. I can also use it to check the path of the tornadic outburst to see if it's safe to go home and I can use it as a GPS if needed. (I don't own a separate GPS. I don't particularly like them but will pay for a day's pass to that service on my cell from time to time.) I always have maps of every location at my fingertips with my cell, even if my well worn paper maps don't cover the area that I'm in that day.

I have no landline. Just my cell.

And, text while driving? That is so passé. With dataphones you can do so much more than text while driving...

(No, I don't do either...unless I'm stopped to wait for a train, in which case I make no promises.)
