I just got my first pair (hopefully) of silkies. They are splash and am so in love already. I have 13 other chickens that are not silkies..yeah im a little obsessed with chickens. Oh well! This will be it until i figure out how many roosters and how many hens i got from the eggs i hatched out last month.

I'm a first time silkie owner, and I have three silkie chicks right now

I have two blue chicks and one black. One of the blue ones is getting some patches of really dark feathering (pretty much black). Is this normal? Will she just be a darker blue as an adult? They are 4 wks old now. Also is it normal to see all the feather shafts at this age? Thanks for answering my newbie questions :) The last pic includes my black silkie chick for comparison

They are adorable. It is totally normal for your baby chicks to look all scraggly while they're growing out. They will change weekly while they go through this process. Yes, normal on the feather shafts, too. I have two blues that I hatched as babies. I had a splash rooster and a black hen and this combo always produces blue chicks. One of my blues is darker than the other. That's how I can tell them apart. When their crests start to get shafts on them, I always squeeze the shafts and the waxy stuff will come off quicker and you can fluff up their "bangs." Have fun with them as they grow up. The more you handle them, the friendlier they'll be. Also you probably know, that it takes a long time to determine gender. Either you have to send in their DNA (I did) or you have to wait for 4-6 mos before you'll be able to tell for sure.

My blue girl looked just like that as a chick. She went through some really weird stages before she got her true color. She turned out cute though

Thanks so much for the detailed reply LisaLouHoo! My silkies look so pathetic right now, so good to know this is normal! I am going to have to be more diligent at handling them, they are the most skittish of all my chicks right now! Hahah I'm dying to know what sex they are- the wait is going to kill me! I may be doing a DNA test before its all said and done!! Patience has never been a strength of mine :)

Anyone have any splash silkie chicks for sale? I'm looking for a splash and a buff chicks, one of each. I'm in ca so shipping would be needed.

I believe Sheri Minkner lives in CA. She has GORGEOUS Silkies and Sizzles, she may be close enough for you to pick up, but she ships as well. I can't remember her website, but a search should turn it up on Google. Theres also a CA thread in the Where Am I? Where Are You? section of the forum.

Good luck!

I have 2 splash sizzle chicks that I'm looking for homes for. I hatched 3 but hubby says I can only keep one. They are 8 weeks old. Mum is a blue silkie and dad is a splash sizzle. Here are pics of mum and dad. I'll get pics of the babies if you are interested. They look to be turning out dads color.
