Hard to say at that age. Some chicks you can tell right after they hatch and then some take few months. So I do not know if it's a roo or hen

Nothing indicating roo yet for a Marans...and they telecast pretty early with most lines (but not all).

You don't have a Splash...you likely have a Blue. Splash would be white with splashes of grey/black...this bird is coming in darker all over...looks to be blue rather than black.

My Marans stand taller than other birds, so don't think that will indicate roo. The roo's develop combs noticeably early...you'll see a row sticking up and then turning red far earlier than the girls....and least with mine that was true.

Thanks for the info...I'm new to hatching chickens and especially new to marans. I knew I bought black and blue marans eggs but someone who came to get chicks said they were splash. Guess he didn't know what he was buying. I hatched them for fun with my 5 year old granddaughter. We didn't really care what they were , but dang they are cute!

With Blue Marans, you can get a mix in the next generation of black, blue, or splash in the chicks, depending upon the mix of parent colorings, simply because of the genetics.

And yes, they are cute.
