Hi there,

I recently got some new chicks and I am trying to figure out if I have a roo or pullet in both my birds. I have a splash silkie and a silver laced orpington. These pictures were taken when they were 8 weeks old. They are now 11 weeks old.

Welcome to BYC!
The Orpington is a cockerel. I'm not good with Silkies so I'll leave it to someone else.
Thank you, I was hoping I was wrong. I cannot have a cockerel where I am at. I was looking online and noticed the roosters had white white hackle feathers but I am so new to this I dont know what I am looking at. ☺

At this age you're looking for how big and red the combs and wattles are. The masculine feathers start coming when they are around 12-20 weeks. Silkies are trickier to sex due to their silkie feathering, comb color and type, and the fact that tend to be late bloomers (males like to wait to crow, females late to lay eggs).

So sorry you can't keep the cockerel. He's a very handsome boy.

The orp is a cockerel, can you get pictures of the silkies comb?
I had a video in my phone so i took a screenshot of it. Same thing, this was at 8 weeks. I can take an updated picture of my silkie later today.

I'd lean for cockerel for that little one, sorry
I am leaning that way too. Silkie is my baby, follows me everywhere and is the sweeting thing. I dont know how I will ever give this one up if it is indeed a rooster :(

Unfortunately, sweet young cockerels have a knack for getting ornery. It's too bad, but im sure youll find hood homes
