Yeah, basically it is a triple chlorinated sugar molecule. Chlorine is toxic. They put it in drinking water in very small amounts, but it is really not good for you. I had a Chem professor mention that once. You particularly don't want chlorine reacting with food in your belly (which is sort of impossible to avoid if the chlorine is on a sugar molecule).
Also they have traced it going inside and coming out of the body and found some of it magically disappears inside you. Wheeeeee!
This is one more reason I try to avoid eating out and processed food. You just never know what is in your food unless you make it from scratch yourself.
Keep in mind that it takes, oh I don't remember exactly, but say a minimum of 20 years of using a chemical before anyone can determine long-term health effects.
It's always best to steer clear of ingesting anything that is artificial. I use local honey in almost everything. I also use agave juice or fruit juice when cooking. Then save the sugar for something that can only do with sugar. Nothing is that bad for you when used in moderation....just like vodka
I have a friend who's daughter is a chemist - says that aspertaime is terribly bad for you and can mess up your chromosomes ( spelling?)
i use it sparingly , and also prefer Stevia.
I must agree that if we would stick to natural foods, the ones around the outside edge of the grocery store (meats, fruits, veggies), we'd all be healthier. It's one reason we no longer use margarine-it's one molecule away from plastic, ick! We've gone back to real unsalted butter now. My problem is I get headaches from sugar, so I have to use the artificial sweeteners. Cant drink coffee without cream and Splenda, cant drink tea without some sweetener. Either of these plain is awful to me. So, either I never drink anyting but water (boring) or I use some type of sweetener. May just have to bite the bullet and buy stevia.
my DH can't use sugar so I buy splenda for him, But I have noticed you can't bake all that good with splenda, so i use very little sugar, since I don't bake very much, and he uses the splenda is his tea, I drink walmart's rasberry tea, or milk. well we both drink milk for dinner, need the calcium for the old bones marrie

i had issues with my tummy too with splenda till i had my gall bladder out. the way i figured out it was splenda was i only had that at my ex mother-in-law's and got sick everytime. i asked what she was using!
I use Splenda when I bake for people with sugar intake restrictions (either diets or diabetes). The last restaurant I was at, I had several regulars in that category, so I always had a selection of sugar free desserts on hand. For people used to sugar, it is no contest, SUGAR RULES! but for those with no choice, it is a good substitute for cooking and baking, and works well in most types of recipies.
I have bad reactions to Aspartame.
I can't drink diet sodas as any of the ones I like all have Aspartame in them, same with diet teas etc. Most "Sugar Free" drink mixes and desserts also have it. I have to look at the labels even on sugar free chewing gum! Asparame gives me very bad heartburn and headaches. I found out because I had been drinking diet pepsi trying to lose a few pounds. I attributed the heartburn and such to stress I was under at the time. Then one day DH accidentally got regular pepsi and I drank that for a few days and the hearburn went away. I had been using instant drink mixes, (the kind you just put in a bottle of water) and crystal lite etc before the diet soda.
Now I can take a couple swallows of anything with aspartame in it and start feeling sick.
