Splenda---have you had any problems using it?

I can only take sugar, white or brown...........better is brown but trying that with hot tea tasted strange

I can not stand the taste of the artificial sweeteners, and they do give me migraines big time as well. Even my beloved Pepsi is one of those culprits!

I love honey its great in tea! I had the opporunitity in tasting a Steveia leaf and they do taste really sweet. I will have to grow more of them next year in my garden for my teas but not for baking stuff with it. Anyone suggest any storage ideas? All I can think of is to store some in ice cubes or pull all the leaves and put it in freezer bags and freeze them.

After using Splenda for a couple months I started to experience joint pain. (knees, shoulders, ankles, elbows, etc). I quit using Splenda and after a few weeks the joint point started to go away and after a month it was all but gone.

DO NOT USE ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS OR ANYTHING WITH ASPARTAME IN IT!!!!

Just look up aspartame poisoning on google.

I won't let anyone in my family have anything with aspartame in it...gum, mints, soda, anything.

Chemicals are yucky, why would you want that stuff in your body anyway!

I had a doctor tell me that Splenda is real sugar that scientists have "turned off" the part of its structure which causes it to stay in the body. So essentially you get the sweet taste without the worry of getting fat from the sweetner/sugar. I have been using Splenda for over a year now and love it, though baking with it has proved difficult at times. Different ratios.

I have been using fructose (not high fructose corn syrup) which is just the sugar in the fruit for about 5 years now. I buy it from Glory Bees, they sell the 50# bag. My husband is hypoglycemic and it's the best thing for him that doesn't have the regular sugar affect. I've been able to make just about everything except marshmallows.

I think Aspertame in Diet soft drinks helped cause Gulf War Syndrome... It causes migraines, bladder problems and a host of other health effects. Splenda is better, but can also cause problems in sensitive people.

I use Xylitol and have not had any side-effects at all.

So far, there haven't been any reports of problems with Xylitol - it is used to prevent cavities and ear infections in children.

You can make ear drops, nasal spray, gargling solution, topical skin solution for healing cuts and treating fungal areas, and anyone can drink it to help with intestinal yeast problems.

I recently cured an eye infection with my homemade Xylitol-sea salt drops.

My ND says Xylitol was developed for deep wound healing. A wound can be packed with it in the field to keep it clean and promote healing during transport (you can do the same with plain sugar or honey).

Here is a good article on Xylitol with extra links at the bottom of the page:

http://www.fitmouth.com/web pages/What is Xylitol.htm

You can cook with Xylitol! I make a no-sugar peach pie that everyone loves. I recommend the type made from birch bark rather than corn because it does not have that odd 'cold' aftertaste. I've tried both and did not like how my homemade ice cream tasted with the Xylitol made from corn.

If I haven't had Xylitol in a while, I notice an initial mild gastro effect much like what you get with sugar-free chocolate, but if used regularly, it goes away.

I researched Internet sources, and buy mine here:

I teach a weight managment class (12 week program, high on education, recommending real food from the grocery store) and the first thing is to get people off the sweet stuff, including artificial sweeteners. There are some interesting studies out there where people lost significant weight by just eliminating artificial sweeteners, no other changes in their diets! Also a fascinating study with rats fed sugar water, plain water, and artificially sweetened water. You'll have to take the class to find out what happened

Fructose has a glycemic index of about 20, which means it does not cause a spike in blood sugar like table sugar will, so less insulin response. Still needs to be in moderation, of course.

Stevia is a great product, I keep the drops (get the pure stevia, not the glycerate, not a good deal) and the packets for when I am out of the house.

Another option to try is agave syrup. It is also lower on the glycemic index. (=less weight gain)

Avoid high fructose corn syrup like the plague that it is. Please get your kids off it, too. It is a factor in the prevalence of lifestyle diseases that are showing up in alarming numbers in 2nd graders, with markers of cardivascular disease and diabetes.

Maltitol, Xylotol, and any other -itols are sugar alcohols, and many people do quite well on them. Try them before stocking your cupboards, though. I find that many people get some intestinal "issues" from them. Think, "You are sleeping on the couch tonight, honey!" Or worse. Use extreme caution with IBS.

You can have your cake and eat it, too.....preferably from scratch with your hen's eggs and with a bunch of friends (so it does not call your name all night long!)

Oh, and I forgot to add.....macular degeneration (leading cause of blindness in US) is linked to aspartame! I was diagnosed at 40, and there are no other cases in my very large and long-lived extended family. I lived on Diet Coke for many years, and used many products with artificial sweeteners. I haven't touched so much as a molecule of the stuff in many years now. I won't tell you how many.....
