However I will tell you that with the splint fractures I've known (4), two of them seemed REALLY bad and there was the same talk of OMG there is probably bone infection and this and that, and the horses healed up just fine albeit after several months of layoff and serious lameness (and worry for owners), one with minor surgery to remove a portion of the bone and the other without surgery. Another case never seemed particularly bad in the first place, and healed fine. (The remaining one was in a 30+ yr old pony who was not especially sound to begin with and she was euthanized irrespective of the good prognosis because she was just so miserable with her hurty leg, and so old to begin with).

So, IME they can seem really pretty grim and turn out fine.

Thank you for the support and stories. Even with all my years as a farrier this is the first broken splint I have seen.
Lots of torn and bumps.......

Glad to hear of some healing!
