In the Brooder
Alas, it has been months since I posted, and lots of developments have gone underway since then. Without any more hesitation, I present my quail babies (they're not really babies, just my babies) new setup:
They all didn't know what to do when they first saw their new home. Pretty soon they were all rolling around in their foodbins and nesting in the straw. I only had to use a handful of straw for the whole cage. The whole bale was $7. I use $5, 30 Ib bag of horse bedding pellets as bedding. That mixed with the straw has proven to be the cheapest, and healthiest substrate I have found yet.
The watering fountain is tied so it can't move.
They are fed already 23 % protein diet as almost mature adults ( 6 weeks tomorrow) supplemented by mealworms (extra protein) bird seed, vegies, fruits and egg treats. Also oyster shells added into food tray for calcium. We have not started laying yet but I'm hoping it's very soon!
