My point was that in America we have been breeding Barred Rocks for decades and do not appear to be having problems with our coloring in our Barred Rocks.

I guess I should have stated the US standard better. Light colored males in the US aren't just more acceptable, they are the norm. Unlike the UK/Europe where the standard is different. Very few (if any) breeders double mate barred Rocks in the US. I am not sure I believe the claim that bad baring will result over time. Many long time breeders continue for decades without any outcrosses, without any lack of quality.@keesmom if the case in the whole US that lighter colored males are more acceptable than dark barred males then like the link above states
Light male x Barred female= light males and barred females only as it is self repeating.
with this mating you dont produce sports, but your program may result in bad barring over time using only light males for breeding.
ok guys we're not really on the same page. im not talking about outcrossing any new lines or introducing new strains. I read that the BPR as a breed will breed true with the use of sports(Light barred males and black females). Sports are a product of pure bred BPR.
if in the continental US(Guam is part of the US) all the breeders and hatcheries cull the darker barred males and black females from the breeding pens, then it makes sense that you will only ever see light males and barred females since that mating is self repeating and does not produce black females or darker barred males.
if you need pics click the link i posted earlier
@dheltzel thats pretty much what im saying if US breeders always breed the light males and barred females thats all they will produce. i never said cull darker chicks, the darker barred birds I mentioned would be the darker barred rooster, which someone on here says is not APA standard and US breeders don't use them or just cull them.
Do you breed BPRs?
thanks for chiming in, i was starting to feel bullied lol!Hi Guys, I've been following this thread where people are saying its impossible to get a "Black Sports Hen" from breeding pure dark barred Plymouth rocks. Let me assure you I breed these guys and I can tell you that you get sometimes get the black sports hens. I have only pure dark barred Plymouth's in my breeding pen and most of the hatch is all the normal dark barred pattern but you do at times randomly get the black sports hen with dark legs come through.
